The lessons that can be drawn from visiting or studying a work of architecture are both many and varied. Whether we focus on programming, construction details, material solutions, relationship to context, siting, or any other aspect, these considerations yield clear concepts that can later be applied to our own projects.
With this in mind, and recognizing that there are multiple ways to approach an architectural problem, we have compiled a list of design strategies that define specific spatial qualities in classics of Chilean residential architecture, grouping together some of the most remarkable design moves from each case.
For optimal and wider propagation of TV and radio frequencies, antennas must be positioned in strategic and, above all, elevated locations. When the local topography is unfavorable, the construction of broadcasting towers and masts becomes essential. Yet, beyond serving a crucial function, these structures stand as visual landmarks, offering an extraordinary opportunity to transform urban infrastructure into pieces of unique aesthetic value. Renowned architects and their teams have designed radio and television towers that marry rigorous structural engineering with the plastic inventiveness of their chosen design solutions. On December 20, the final curating process for the first edition of the National Essay and Research Competition, Arquitectura Escrita 2017, took place at the national headquarters of the Colegio de Arquitectos de Chile.
Organized by Grupo Arquitectura Caliente and co-organized by Ediciones ARQ, the competition awarded the 20 best articles among the 87 proposals submitted in the undergraduate and graduate categories, representing 18 architecture schools across 9 different Chilean cities.
The competition was directed by Gabriela García de Cortázar and featured a jury of 30 prominent academics and professionals who formed the Evaluation Committee. All the articles will be published digitally soon and compiled into a book available for pre-order at this link.

The Brazilian Association of Landscape Architects - ABAP, in partnership with CAU-SP, has announced the results of the first edition of the Rosa Kliass Prize for landscape architecture graduation projects, open to final undergraduate thesis submissions from all architecture schools across the country. Entries had to address projects of any scale in landscape architecture, landscape planning, historical research, or technical and critical work within the broader field of landscape architecture.
The projects were evaluated by region, with first-place winners selected for each. From these, one work was chosen as the overall national winner. The regions were divided as follows:
Designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects (PCPA), San Francisco’s tallest tower and its accompanying transit center are now partially open to the public after a decade in the making. The Salesforce development comprises both the tower and the transit center, where PCPA has integrated planning, architecture, transportation, and landscape design to mark a new chapter in American urban development.

ReConstructo is a group exhibition curated by Mexican architects Luis Carbonell and Andres Souto, presented at Zuecca Project Space in parallel with the International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale 2018. The exhibition offers a multifaceted look at simultaneous and overlapping readings of the actions and agents of destruction that subsequently paved the way for a latent reconstruction following the 2017 earthquakes in Mexico.
Since its founding, the National Workers' Housing Fund Institute (Infonavit) has conducted research to guide its urban, architectural, economic, and social approach to housing in Mexico.
Nearly a year after an earthquake struck Mexico City and several Mexican states on September 19, 2017, we are beginning to see the fruits of the many efforts that arose in response to the slow—and at times nonexistent—government reaction, with citizens taking it upon themselves to organize and help. Various associations, foundations, and collectives joined the cause, and the architectural community was no exception.
This gave rise to ReConstruir México, driven by the determination to put architectural expertise at the service of those most in need, assisting in the reconstruction and conservation of affected heritage by providing technical support and advice, as well as designing and proposing solutions. However, goodwill alone was not enough; a multidisciplinary, integrating entity was needed to channel these efforts into physical housing for the victims. PienZa Sostenible stepped into this role, coordinating the process as a non-profit organization. As a platform for study, analysis, critique, engagement, and implementation addressing Mexico's current situation, PienZa Sostenible promotes outreach and drives projects aimed at improving quality of life, social development, economic growth, and environmental sustainability in line with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The concept of Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art) shaped 19th-century art movements and influenced several design schools of the era—including the Bauhaus, which brought the term into the modern age. The school's unstructured architectural designs and avant-garde furniture paved the way for fields such as fashion, graphic design, and painting. At the Bauhaus, disciplines drew inspiration from one another, blurring the boundaries between art and industry. When the school closed in 1933, however, many design projects were left unfinished.
To revive some of these interrupted Bauhaus design projects, Adobe has launched the "Hidden Treasures" initiative to recreate five typefaces originally designed by five of the school's masters: Joost Schmidt, Xanti Schawinsky, Reinhold Rossig, Carl Marx, and Alfred Arndt.
The Museu de Arte de São Paulo has put up for sale a limited edition of one hundred crystal easels designed by Lina Bo Bardi. Originally introduced in 1968 and removed from the museum in 1996, the iconic easels were redesigned by the firm Metro Arquitetos and brought back to the MASP gallery in 2015. Each unit costs R$ 10,000, and the proceeds will support the museum's activities.
Over the course of five days, 36 third-year students from the UDD Architecture Program in Concepción, Chile, traveled to San Juan, Chiloé, to design and build a lookout for the local community. The main objective of this academic initiative was to connect students with physical materiality, marking the beginning of their professional degree cycle. The project is part of "Experiencia Detonante II" (Triggering Experience II), one of three hands-on experiences students undergo during their studies to engage directly with territory, materiality, and the discipline. Specifically, the Concepción campus, through its Escuela SurSur, fosters this connection to materiality by engaging with remote locations that preserve traditional local crafts.
Year after year, natural disasters leave thousands of people homeless, forcing them to seek shelter as their only option. In many cases, cities are unable to address these crises due to a lack of resources. Furthermore, providing aid while preserving human dignity has become increasingly complex, rendering traditional solutions completely unviable.
In these moments, innovation and creativity in hands-on construction play a vital role, ultimately yielding faster, more efficient architectural models that can be rapidly replicated following natural disasters.
When designing semi-permanent architecture, certain principles must be followed. Below, we have compiled a set of tips and examples to guide this process.
If you want fast rendering, optimize the size of staging assets, textures, and light sources. Learn your rendering software inside out and construct your scenes based on actual resource needs. There is no point in using the largest, most detailed, or highest-resolution assets for every single case; doing so will only leave you frustrated with your computer and software, struggling to navigate the viewport while constantly wishing for the latest processor, graphics card, more RAM, and more money to upgrade your rig—entirely unnecessarily.
Whenever possible, choose a GPU-based renderer, such as Thea Render for SketchUp, which is used in the examples in this article.

Not long ago, we read in one of the winning texts of the National Criticism Competition: “In Chimbote, a city that grew turning its back on its bay, shaped by the pursuit of an economically productive life, there is not much to do, not much to enjoy. And this is not only due to the lack of venues for cultural or recreational activities, but because in the street itself, in the public space, there is not much to encounter. It seems difficult for this situation to change when it comes to building the city (…) in a city that became boring, useful only for a precarious economic production, where the street is merely a transit space, of coming and going without much emotion (…). Hopefully, boredom will not rob us of the ability to imagine new ways of growth for our city.” A harsh and challenging critique of the city's future trajectory.
Today, this project emerges as a response, showcasing alternative ways of seeing, living, and growing for this warm city on Peru's northern coast. It is a way to rediscover a vibrant, colorful Chimbote, and we are thrilled to present and highlight it here: the flip side, the actions taken in response to criticism, or precisely what critical thinking can achieve. Beyond being a breath of fresh air, it serves as a replicable model of small yet significant initiatives that can be carried out in cities across the country, beyond Lima.
Almost two years ago, South America was hit by a public health crisis that affected hundreds of thousands of women. In Brazil, more than 2,600 children were born with microcephaly—a congenital condition in which the skull is smaller than normal—and other complications resulting from the Zika virus infection. Brazilians quickly became accustomed to the unfamiliar name of the disease, which rapidly spread through the northeastern region of the country and crossed borders into Colombia and Venezuela. However, as the disease became an international concern, it also became clear that it was a much greater problem for some groups than for others.
"How do Chileans live?" is the question directors Joaquín Mora and Verónica Wüst seek to answer in the series Habitar, which portrays the current reality of housing in Chile through the intimacy of their homes.
On October 22, the nine-episode series will launch on the official website of Proyecto Habitar and on ArchDaily en Español. It will also premiere on Thursday, October 26, as part of the Arqfilmfest programming.

Barça’s history is closely tied to Barcelona, the city where the soccer club was founded in 1899. Today, the reigning Spanish league champions paid tribute to the city with the launch of their third kit for the 2018/2019 season.
The third jersey features a pale pink color crossed by a diagonal sash running from the left shoulder to the bottom right. The stripe pays tribute to Avinguda Diagonal, one of Barcelona's most important avenues, and is superimposed on a reddish-toned satellite image of the Eixample district.
The Docomomo São Paulo Chapter and the Institute of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo in São Carlos are hosting the 6th Docomomo São Paulo Seminar, which will take place from September 24 to 26 at the University of São Paulo Campus in São Carlos.
The 6th Docomomo São Paulo Seminar will feature lectures and panel discussions with invited Brazilian and international experts.
Designed by El Equipo de Mazzanti, the Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá has been selected as the winner in the 'Healthcare Architecture' category of the 2018 Building of the Year Awards, making it the only Colombian project—and one of only two Latin American representatives—to win in the competition organized by ArchDaily, the network of websites to which ArchDaily Colombia also belongs.
The Building of the Year Awards are presented annually to the best projects published on our English-language edition—the most visited architecture website in the world—with winners chosen by the readers themselves, who can vote across 15 typological categories in two stages. In this edition, the competition reached 100,000 votes from around the world within a two-week period.

The threat of climate change adds to the multiple challenges of an increasingly urbanized world. Beyond the need for cities to establish themselves as prosperous and sustainable organisms, climate disruptions also jeopardize public health and local economies, threatening to bring about consequences that are difficult to even imagine. Climate action is rooted in cities—the very spaces that will determine the planet's future.
The concept of low-carbon development refers to planning urban growth with lower emission rates of carbon dioxide (CO2), the primary greenhouse gas (GHG). After reviewing 700 studies, a team of researchers from the University of Leeds, in partnership with the Coalition for Urban Transitions, concluded that low-carbon measures can help achieve several urban development priorities, such as job creation, public health, social inclusion, and improved accessibility.
The challenge proposed by the competition, aimed at students, was to redefine the highway motel typology, creating a building that would engage with the Rio de Janeiro skyline and focus on design and entertainment for its guests.
According to the jury, “Many proposals focused on autonomous volumetric design, as if shifting volumes to meet a functional solution could account for the complexity required for urban integration. Therefore, the most critical evaluation criteria were program innovation, proper circulation planning, and the interaction between architecture and open spaces. In this regard, the proposals that managed to leverage the site's potential achieved the competition's objectives: the creation of an URBAN Motel.”
The need for both physical and mental reconstruction opens the door to various interpretations, highlighting the human capacity to adapt despite adversity: resilient individuals facing challenges in remote territories once constrained by armed conflict, oppression, and fear.
Post-conflict architecture is one of the major contributions to rebuilding a country that needs greater social awareness in this peace process. Redefining territories, preserving memory, and fostering a sense of ownership are the essential characteristics shaping these architectural spaces and reclaiming areas once marked by violence. Today, their symbolism plays an important role within many communities that find identity through architecture, proving that these remote locations in Colombia are now examples of unity and coexistence.
In light of this reality, we have selected five projects that have fostered a deep connection to the territory, offering flexible spaces that support new ways of building social fabric.
At the end of each year, we issue a call for submissions for graduation projects from our Portuguese-speaking readers. Through this, we aim to select the most interesting proposals to present inspiring visions and foster debates for our entire audience.
For this edition, we received 466 proposals from all over Brazil, as well as cities like Lisbon and Luanda. Before presenting the 30 selected by our editorial team, it should be noted that this list does not necessarily feature the "best" projects received. Instead, it highlights the works we found most well-presented, graphically engaging, and with themes that seemed particularly relevant for a final graduation project. Rather than simply resolving a design program satisfactorily, we believe that a final graduation project—as a culmination of a student's efforts during the transition from academia to professional practice (while, importantly, still part of their academic journey)—should raise questions and provoke discussion about the proposed theme.
It is worth noting that several submissions did not follow the guidelines of the call and were disqualified or lacked sufficient material for evaluation.
