In both of ArchDaily's last two major website redesigns, one idea was central to our thinking: Mies van der Rohe's aphorism "less is more." These redesigns added new features, sure - but more importantly, they identified extraneous features on the site and removed them. Today, on February 9th 2017, we are removing one more feature that we no longer believe to be necessary on ArchDaily: comments on certain articles.
All comments previously left on our articles will still be visible, preserving the many positive contributions left by our readers over the years. But from today, we will be gradually shifting the discussion to social media, leaving comments open only on News and Editorial articles while the option to comment on Projects, Events, Competitions and Publications articles will be removed. Instead, we encourage readers to take part in the discussions happening on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, or to get in touch through our contact form for direct feedback or substantive comments about our articles. This 2016 has been a hectic, frenetic year with complex geopolitical, social, and cultural issues placing our world at a crossroads of an uncertain future. Do we look back into the nostalgia of a safe past, or do we step up and be an active part of a hopeful future?
As architects we have a tremendous responsibility in this scenario; historically, our profession has shaped the collective ideas of the future, generation after generation, by weighing-in on the crises that arise in our societies. In the absence of clear leadership to guide us towards an inspiring future, this is our opportunity to serve as agents of change for the future we deserve.

We provided our readers with a blank canvas, a single white egg. From this common starting point, we asked architects to let their innovation and creativity shine by putting an architectural twist on the average pastel Easter egg. From gifs to famous architects as eggs, we received over 450 submissions to our sites in English, Spanish, Chinese and Portuguese. It was particularly difficult to narrow down our favorites, and our selection really only scratches the surface of the many creative Easter eggs that we received from our incredibly talented readers.
8 years ago today, ArchDaily launched with a daunting mission: to provide inspiration, knowledge and tools to the architects tasked with designing for the 3 billion people that will move into cities in the next 40 years. This mission has captured the imagination of architects worldwide, leading us to become the world's most visited architecture website – serving over 400,000 visitors daily in English, Spanish, Portuguese and now Chinese. In our 8th year, we've made great strides towards this goal: from conveying information in another language through ArchDaily China to finding new ways to transmit information such as our ArchDaily Essentials series; from better ways to engage readers such as our #YourArchDaily Instagram campaign to presenting more of an editorial voice through articles such as our selection of most inspiring leaders of 2015; and from a better way to display our site with our new redesign to a better way to manage our database with our custom publishing platform.
Of course, the most important part of this progress is the continued support and engagement of our ever-growing readership. By sharing our content on social media or discussing it with friends and colleagues, you're helping us to reach more and more architects, and thus helping us to fulfill our goal – thank you for joining us on this mission.
