The opening of the exhibition American Perspectives: From Classic to Contemporary presents the hand-drawn worlds of prominent American architects and architectural draftsmen. The art of architectural representation in the USA, particularly at the beginning of the 20th century, reached heights of originality and perfection, which still stands out today. On show will be works by Frank Lloyed Wright, Richard Neutra, Lebbeus Woods and Achilles Rizzoli.
Storefront for Art and Architecture hosts Facing East: Chinese Urbanism in Africa, an exhibition by journalist Michiel Hulshof (Tertium, Amsterdam) and architect Daan Roggeveen (MORE Architecture, Shanghai). Facing East investigates the impact of Chinese development on fast-growing African cities, and is built around personal stories of individuals involved in the urbanization process.
The city of Pittsburgh encountered and was transformed by modern architecture in an ambitious program of urban revitalization in the 1950s and ’60s. HAC Lab Pittsburgh: Imagining the Modern untangles Pittsburgh’s complicated relationship with modern architecture and urban planning. This experimental presentation at Carnegie Museum of Art’s Heinz Architectural Center includes abundant archival materials from the period, an active architecture studio, and a salon-style discussion space, unearthing layers of history and a range of perspectives.
“The City and the Water” Summer School is organized by the University of Pisa (DESTeC, Long Cycle Master Degree Course in Architectural Engineering), the Visual Art Center of Pietrasanta and the Municipality of Pietrasanta (Tuscany, Italy), with the contribution of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca. The Summer School, that will take place from 7th to 20th September 2015 at the Visual Arts Center, will see students in Architecture, Engineering, Design, Art Schools and young professionals, working together on the Versilia Area, and in particular on the “Due Laghi” artisan area: a context with a high environmental value and a precious landscape, with several artistic and artisanal laboratories, but actually mined by a strong decay. The project proposals aim to provide indications for the creation of new spaces, in order to make the area more functional and enjoyable for those who live and work there, and for all the future potential visitors, with particular attention to the creation of spaces for cultural and artistic events. After the first design stage, a self-construction laboratory will take place in the “Due Luaghi” area. Students will be guided by the architect Santiago Cirugeda (Recetas urbanas, Seville), Scientific Director of the Summer School, and they will work in close collaboration with the artists and artisans of the "2 Luoghi". The Course Director is Roberto Pierini, President of the Master Degree Course in Architectural Engineering at the University of Pisa. The Summer School, among the guest lecturers, will have Alessandra Capanna, architect and professor at the Faculty of Architecture of Roma La Sapienza University. Open events will be organized also in the Cloister of S. Agostino (Piazza del Duomo, Pietrasanta) and in the “Due Laghi” artisan area (Via Sarzanese 111, Pietrasanta). This event hosted in collaboration with the NSF TUES grant’s Center for Performative Design & Engineering Technology will consist of a series of presentations and panel discussions, aiming to instigate a conversation from different perspectives on the areas of data visualization, sensing, simulation, and artificial intelligence.
The Alvar Aalto Symposium gathers together top names in contemporary architecture. This year’s international figures include American architect Greg Lynn, one of the Symposium’s keynote speakers. In line with the theme of the event – DO! – speakers will be rolling up their sleeves and personally opening up about what architects and urban planners really do. The symposium will be held on 7–9 August 2015 in Jyväskylä, Finland.
The author goes along with the observer in a photographic stroll through the colors, surfaces and lights of the Grand Tour City of the Leaning Tower, Pisa. "Emotions from Pisa" is more than a collection of fine photographs: it is an exploration of the dialogue between place and photographer. The “emotions” of the shots are recognized, captured and made available to us. Pasqualetti preserves moments which we often miss and teaches us to read and feel the messages sent out by places and buildings. He shows us the Pisa that we know and above all a Pisa that we never noticed. This collection of photographs does not only record the face of the city, here shown in ways which truly surprise and move. His photos also demonstrate how architecture, through its forms and its surfaces, can evoke emotions that are constantly changing, as sun and seasons take their daily and yearly paths.

EAA- Emre Arolat Architects, a leading international architectural practice based in İstanbul and London, presents an exhibition exploring the urban histories of both cities. Through a two way, dual city approach the practice will reveal “situations” that unite and differentiate these two great cities at the east and west ends of Europe in their development. The exhibition covers a timeline beginning with the mid 19th century that shows key events or turning-points in the course of their stories respectively. The exhibition is curated by EAA - Emre Arolat Architects, in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Murat Güvenç from Istanbul City University and London-based Urban Planning & Development Consultant Ömer Çavuşoğlu.
On Friday, May 9, jurors Philip Casey; Tom Kundig, FAIA; Nancy Ludwig; Michael Maltzan; and Michael Sorkin convened at the Center for Architecture to select the winners of the 2015 AIANY Housing Design Awards. The jury selected five projects, listed below, to be honored.
For the next year, visitors at New York's Brooklyn Bridge Park will have the chance to interact with "Please Touch the Art", an exhibition of works by Danish artist Jeppe Hein. Playful, inventive, and immediately striking, Hein's work engages audiences as "active participants," inviting spontaneity and user interaction. Curated by Nicholas Baume, the exhibition contains three bodies of work by Hein: the soaring water jets of Appearing Rooms, the sixteen bright red benches of Modified Social Benches, and the reflective vertical planks of Mirror Labyrinth NY.
The exhibition is a project of New York City's Public Art Fund, a non-profit organization responsible for numerous free exhibitions offering "powerful experiences with art and the urban environment".

Sketch to Structure unfolds the architectural design process to show how buildings take shape. With sketches, plans, blueprints, renderings, and models from the Heinz Architectural Center collection, this exhibition reveals that architectural design, from initial concept to client presentation, isn’t straightforward.
Next week, the New Museum in New York will kickstart the annual IDEAS CITY Festival on Thursday, May 28th. Themed after Italo Calvino's "The Invisible City," the three-day event will "explore questions of transparency and surveillance, citizenship and representation, expression and suppression, participation and dissent, and the enduring quest for visibility in the city" through a number of platforms, such as panels discussions, poetry slams, mobile art installations, workshops, exhibitions and most notably the transformation of New York City's Bowery neighborhood into a "temporary city of ideas."

Starting June 10, the RIBA will present The Brutalist Playground - an exhibition that is part sculpture, part architectural installation, which invites people of all ages to come and play, the Brutalist way. Occupying the entire Architecture Gallery, the immersive landscape is a new commission by Turner Prize nominated design and architecture collective Assemble and artist Simon Terrill. It explores the abstract concrete playgrounds that were designed as part of Brutalist housing estates in the mid-twentieth century, but which no longer exist. They became playgrounds unsuitable for play.
As competition in the UK becomes tighter, architects are keen to find work overseas, often in such places where the prevailing human rights record has been a growing cause of concern and debate for some time.
This August, Building Trust will host a Design + Build Workshop in Umbria, Italy, in collaboration with local artisan collective Terraepaglia. Combining innovative building design with natural construction methods, the workshop will focus on the creation of functional spaces through sustainable means and materials. Over the course of 12 days, participants will work closely with Building Trust and Terraepaglia to learn hands-on construction methods including adobe brick making, straw bale and rammed earth construction, natural plastering, and wood flooring. Space Packing Architecture: The Life and Work of Alfred Neumann, the first-ever exhibition on the Czech architect Alfred Neumann, is on display at Cabinet of Architecture (Kabinet architektury) in Ostrava, Czech Republic. Accompanied by architectural models and life-size spatial units constructed especially for the show, this exhibition focuses on Neumann’s major design projects in Israel from the 1960s, undertaken with his collaborators Zvi Hecker and Eldar Sharon, and explores his vision for a new kind of modern architecture.
