56 Leonard Street by Herzog & de Meuron: the video

A few months ago we featured an amazing skyscraper by Herzog & de Meuron, that will have a great impact in  the skyline of . I’m very intrigued by the final result of this project, as it develops a pixelated unit composition that many have propossed, but no one has built.

Now, a friend sent me this amazing video to market the building, done by Tronic Studios. The video reveals some portions of the structure of this building, such as beams that distribute the vertical charges of this particular typology.

We’ll see…

In Progress: 290 Mulberry / SHoP Architects

290 Mulberry is defined by its context through a direct response to zoning and building code regulations. Located in Nolita, , this building is bound on the north by Houston Street and on the west by the historic Puck Building on Mulberry Street.  A zoning district requirement specifying a enclosure for the two street walls created an opportunity to respond directly to the Puck Building, one of ’s most recognizable masonry buildings.  We then focused the idea on the reinterpretation of local laws and regulations with a contemporary response to masonry construction and detailing that doesn’t attempt to imitate the past.

California Academy of Science / Green roof construction and opening

Fernando Herrera shared with us some very interesting photos of the California Academy of Science (previously posted with the official photos). First, a series of pictures from the opening day on which you can see the building with people on it, and get a better idea on the scale and how it works. He even caught Renzo Piano admiring his own work!

Also, he sent us a series of pictures of the during construction, on which you can see more details such as the irrigation system and the skylights.

Enjoy the gallery! I also recommend checking out Fernando´s Flickr page, he has photographed an interesting selection of contemporary buildings in the US and Europe.

California Academy of Sciences / Renzo Piano

The last 2 times I went to San Francisco, I saw the progress of the new Academy of Sciences building, by italian architect Renzo Piano. It was amazing to see how the 2.5 acre green roof took shape. The building is now complete, it was opened to public yesterday.

The building recovers two and mixes it with a whole new structure, which is actually very transparent, connecting it visually with the Golden Park, away from the old conception of dark museums. Shade will be provided by a canopy that goes around the bulding, with solar panels on it.

Sustainability was a key aspect of the design, as this project is one of the ten pilot “green building” projects of the San Francisco Department of Environment, aiming to get platinum certification. Actually, the building will consume 30-35% less energy than required by code.

The project conserves two limestone walls from the previous building (1934), and houses a planetarium, a rain forest habitat and an aquarium, and several exhibition spaces to house the several Academy collections.

The planetarium and the bubble that contains the rain forest habitat are the two big spheres that shape the green roof. The roof becomes a landscape with California native species, that won´t need extra maitenance or water, attracting local species to occupy it. Thus, the green roof won´t be fully accesible to visitors, who can only walk through a small path.

Pentagon Memorial / KBAS Studio

The Pentagon memorial will be inaugurated tomorrow, 7 years after . This memorial is the result of a competition won by KBAS Studio, who worked closely with the familiars of the victims. Pre fabrication and computer modelling where vital on the design and construction process of this memorial. More pictures after the architect’s statement.

“Like many people, from the moment we witnessed and learned of the horrific loss of life on the morning of September 11, 2001, we simply wished to extend our hearts to those whose lives had changed forever.  Words will never describe how honored we feel to have played such a significant role in the Pentagon Memorial.  It has been a true privilege to be part of a stellar team, and to have worked so closely with so many people who gave the project their absolute best.  Further, we will forever be inspired by the strength and determination that carries all of the family members we have come to know so well over the past 6 years.  Thousands of people contributed to this place so that its contemplative integrity will persist into the distant future and with its dedication, the Pentagon Memorial will take on its own life, attracting meaning and contemplative interpretation from all of those who visit this special place.”
