The Arica Barroca festival is a cultural celebration honoring the South Andean identity of Arica and Parinacota, a Cultural Landscape of the Americas. This year’s festival theme, "From the Pacific to the Andes: Pirates, Traffickers, and Franciscans," unfolds over three days of celebrating the region's rich essence. The community is invited to participate in over 20 free activities, including specialized talks on history, archaeology, architecture, music, and the visual arts; generative roundtables that entice with the aromas and flavors of heritage cuisine; art workshops to revisit ancestral crafts; Baroque concerts at the Arica Cathedral; and an art and design fair, the Neo Barroca, a showcase inviting local artists to the Plaza Colón to share their work. The festival will take place from May 16 to 18 and is open to the public.

The 2019 Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Norman Foster Travelling Scholarship opens today and welcomes applications from architecture students enrolled in schools of architecture around the world. A £7,000 grant will be awarded to one winner by a panel of judges which will include Lord Foster and RIBA President Ben Derbyshire.

In their most recent design competition, Bee Breeders partnered with Urban Zoo Coworking to seek a signature style for Urban Zoo’s coworking spaces. Viewed as a prototype to be adapted to each new venue, these interior designs needed to be customizable for various users. Common inhabitants of Urban Zoo Coworking’s spaces include freelancers, start-ups, and small businesses who need a workspace to meet their different creative needs.

Introduction

The social catastrophe of Latin America has its epicenter in popular settlements.

It is in Latin America, the most urbanized and unequal region in the world, where 104 million people live in popular settlements. Here, 1 of every 4 inhabitants of urban areas, lives in a slum, villa, favela or camp, in a situation of poverty. These populations must subsist by their own means, with the constant violation of their rights.

As part of Tripoli’s economic revival plan, the International Union of Architects (UIA), in collaboration with the Lebanese Federation of Engineers and Architects (on behalf of the Tripoli Special Economic Zone / TSEZ), the Union of Mediterranean Architects (UMAR), and the Lebanese Government, have launched an international architecture competition to create a Knowledge and Innovation Center in the northern city of Lebanon.

The proposed site is situated on an empty lot within Oscar Niemeyer’s abandoned Rachid Karami International Fair, a modernist exhibition complex that has yet to see the light of restoration. The objective of the competition is to create a technology and business hub which will foster and promote start-up businesses and entrepreneurs, attracting students, young graduates, local and international companies to Tripoli and the neighboring region.

The $100,000 RAIC International Prize for transformative architecture is inviting submissions for its third edition, the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) is pleased to announce.

The issue of diasporas, observed in the displacement of populations across the globe, is a pressing topic. Everyone is in search of a dream: the city as a welcoming shelter for those whom life's adversities have expelled from their lands. To conceive of this CITY that people can call home, in times of diaspora, we need UTOPIA. The city that does not yet exist is a possible city, or even more: it is the construction of an ideal of urban experiences grounded in hospitality and solidarity.

2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus, the German school that revolutionized education and production in architecture and design.

The main topic of this edition, HOME|any|more|?, proposes an interrogative approach of the possibility of being at home in today's world.

This issue of QU3 aims to explore research, projects, and actions in Latin America that observe and engage with the city through contemporary networks and the challenges that define them. The organizers observe these phenomena and engage in practices within a complex and open urbanism, which is the result of a constant interaction between agents and agencies, as well as processes of innovation in the distribution of urban decision-making. The Venice Architecture Biennale exhibition is the premier showcase for revolutionary ideas in contemporary architecture and design through national venues.

The purpose of this competition is to challenge Architects and Students to design a replacement for the Townsite Homes in Henderson, NV, which have outlived their intended use and have mostly fallen into disrepair, creating neighborhood blight. The project should fully embody the principles of sustainable design and livable communities. It is the responsibility of the entrants to determine the number of new dwellings on the site, or re-purpose the existing home. February 2019 (New York, NY) – Radical Innovation, which challenges designers, architects, hoteliers and students to pioneer compelling ideas in travel and hospitality, is now accepting entries to its annual competition. New in 2019, the competition will distinguish between built and unbuilt projects, in addition to honoring a select individual who challenges the hospitality community through the art of invention with the Innovator Award. All innovators are encouraged to submit their concepts through RadicalInnovationAward.com through April 3.

Paris La Défense is seeking to vitalise the ‘interstitial volumes’ that lie beneath its central esplanade, interlocked with underground infrastructures. Located at the heart of La Défense, those spaces are very close to public transport and offer high potential due to their distinctive size and morphology. The aim is to use them to develop a new offering of activities accessible to the public – and see a lively and unusual destination emerge as a result. Paris La Défense, as the urban planner, developer and manager of the business district, is launching a competitive dialogue process. The purpose to this process is to award an architectural, programming, engineering and planning services framework agreement for the vitalisation of the central residual volumes. A bonus of 200 000 € will be given to the selected candidates who will complete the procedure.

Crime, whether we like it or not, is a driving force behind a large proportion of technological ‘progress’. In 1817, a burglary at a British dockyard led the government to start a competition, challenging locksmiths to invent an unpickable lock. The result was the Chubb detector lock, and it remained ‘unpicked’ for 33 years.
