These days architecture is both a weapon and a victim of intolerance. Historic buildings are destroyed for what they symbolize, and there are calls for the building of walls and the construction of refugee cities. These actions are symptoms of the global preoccupation with fear of others and the attempt to keep people “out.” The Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt) community rejects these injustices and has built the architecture department on the principle that the purpose of architecture is to support the social good.

Open to undergraduate and graduate students in planning, architecture, landscape architecture or urban design, Hart Howerton’s Fellowship program offers students the advantages of professional office experience, collaborative interdisciplinary design and global travel and research. Fellows receive a competitive salary during their internship and a generous stipend for housing assistance along with living and travel support.

The exhibition "Gothic: The Age of the Great Cathedrals" will begin in Switzerland in December 2017 in the choir of the Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Fribourg. It will go to the Cathedral of Bern (Berner Münster, Cathedral of Bordeaux and Church of St. Germain l'Auxerrois in Paris. The idea of this project is a journey through the extraordinary saga of these great medieval buildings. This adventure begins with the construction of the Basilica Cathedral of Saint-Denis, the place where Gothic art was born. Throughout the exhibition, the visitors will discover secrets of 17 monuments chosen among the most beautiful, the most emblematic. The International Specialized Exhibition EXPO 2017 “Future Energy” held in Astana from June 10 to September 10 significantly changed the architectural appearance of Kazakhstan’s capital.
A new district with a total area of 174 hectares was built to hold EXPO 2017, 25 of them were allocated for use as the exhibition venue.
The EXPO 2017 Exhibition site designed by Adrian Smith+Gordon Gill Architecture, a famous US agency, is a new growth and development point of the capital of Kazakhstan. It is a microdistrict that is fully provided with its own infrastructure and includes recreation and park areas, residential buildings, a hotel, a congress center, a multifunctional shopping mall and some other infrastructure facilities.

The University of Virginia’s School of Architecture Dean Ila Berman recently announced her intention to launch the NEXT CITIES INSTITUTE, an interdisciplinary design and research platform focused on the rapidly changing dynamics of global urban futures. With an aim to forecast and shape the vital urbanism of this century, the NEXT CITIES INSTITUTE will be a university-wide initiative, led by the School of Architecture and coalescing expertise throughout the University of Virginia, with partners in its Schools of Law, Leadership and Public Policy, Engineering, and Arts and Sciences. Dean Berman spoke about the NEXT CITIES INSTITUTE, its mission, and how it will transform the way students of architecture and its related fields will approach the design of future cities.
The Avery Review, a journal of critical essays on architecture published by the Office of Publications at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation, invites submissions for its first-ever Essay Prize. The call is open to current students and recent graduates, whether in schools of architecture or elsewhere (eligibility details below). In keeping with the mission of the journal, we hope to receive submissions that use the genres of the review and the critical essay to explore the urgent ideas and problems that animate the field of architecture. We’re looking for essays that test and expand the author’s own intellectual commitments—theoretical, architectural, and political—through the work of others.
