Following two weeks of enthusiastic voting, ArchDaily readers have selected their top 10 projects of the year from a pool of over 400 nominees.

We are pleased to present today the finalist projects for the 2019 Building of the Year Award (ODA19). After two weeks of nominations and more than 10,000 votes, the favorite projects have been selected from hundreds of works built in Portuguese-speaking countries. Our jury of experts—our own readers—has once again done an outstanding job selecting the 15 finalists. The projects span a remarkable diversity of programs, including cultural, commercial, and educational facilities, public squares, high-end residences, and renovations. This selection offers an engaging overview of contemporary architectural production in Brazil and Portugal, deeply shaped by material exploration, the richness of our geographic contexts, and the diverse challenges faced by our societies.

For the fourth time, we are giving our readers the responsibility of recognizing and awarding the projects that have had the greatest impact on the profession through the ArchDaily Brasil Building of the Year 2020 Award. By voting, you become part of an unbiased network of jurors recognizing the most relevant projects of the past year.

Over the next three weeks, the collective intelligence of our readers will filter through hundreds of projects from Portuguese-speaking countries—Brazil, Portugal, Mozambique, Angola, Guinea-Bissau, East Timor, Equatorial Guinea, Macau, Cape Verde, and São Tomé and Príncipe—published in 2019, selecting the best built works in Portuguese-speaking territories.

Under the theme 'Factory of Ideas and Innovation,' the 33rd CAP Steel Design Competition for architecture students awarded first place to the team from Universidad Central, composed of students Hugo Valenzuela and Diego Lacazette, guided by professors Ricardo Atanasio and Álvaro Herrera, for their proposal "Biome and Seed Research Center."

The student team's proposal consists of "a controlled space for experimentation and observation of crop species in the face of desertification," as explained in the official project description.

The artwork is located at the Pedro de Valdivia Norte entrance of the Santiago Metropolitan Park. It was created by the creative studio Lira Arte Público—specialists in public space interventions led by curator and urban designer Esteban Barrera—in close collaboration with the Santiago Metropolitan Park team, who designed and implemented physical distancing signage, along with this artistic intervention consisting of a floor mural of over 1,000 m² created by Chilean artist Cekis.
