Architecture Week Prague is an international festival of architecture and urbanism taking place annually in the city of Prague, Czech Republic. It presents a selection of the most outstanding projects of contemporary world architecture, urban planning, landscape, urban regeneration and development.
Celebrating the 10th edition of the Festival, we ask ourselves and our guest exhibitors what is the Organic City and how our ideas, concepts and projects nurture this form of life. The answers to this question will form a multimedia exhibition of scale models, films, photography, graphic work and text to be presented in the Mánes exhibition space in the centre of Prague. Join us for Harnessing the Full Potential of Modern Dimensional Stone: An evening of tapas and education about Stone from Spain!

Since man first figured out how to dig a hole, we have been harvesting the natural treasures of the earth and using stone for our buildings and arts. With such a long history, it’s easy to forget how much research, innovation and technology infuses the stone industry - breathing new life into the possibilities provided by this material that is millions of years old.

An exhibition highlighting the work of Oskar Hansen (1922-2005), architect, urban planner, and theorist, has opened at the Yale School of Architecture (YSoA) running from 1 September to 17 December 2016.

Oskar Hansen: Open Form traces the evolution of Hansen’s theory of Open Form from its origin in his own architectural projects to its application in film, visual games, and other artistic practices. The exhibition will be on view at YSoA through 17 December in Paul Rudolph Hall, 180 York St. It is free and open to the public Monday-Friday 9.00- 5.00, and Saturday 10.00-5.00.

The Arthur Ross Architecture Gallery at Columbia GSAPP presents The Other Architect, an exhibition of architects who expanded their role in society to shape the contemporary cultural agenda without the intervention of built form. On display are twenty-three case studies dating from the 1960s to today that illustrate how international and often multidisciplinary groups applied experimental attitudes and collaborative strategies to invent new tools and alternative methods outside of traditional design practice.

Archifest 2016 returns with a Pavilion designed with ‘Exhale’ as its theme at Raffles Place Park. Celebrating its 10th edition, Archifest’s theme for this year ‘Exhale’ seeks to challenge the rapidity and density of activities that define our pace of life, weigh in on the state of Singapore’s built environment and breathe new life into it.

Sarasota Architectural Foundation, in partnership with Sarasota Museum of Art, presents the third annual midcentury modern architecture festival November 11-13, 2016. SarasotaMOD will pay a special tribute to acclaimed architect Victor Lundy. The three-day weekend will feature Lundy-themed presentations by architects and historians, a Lundy film screening, trolley and walking tours, a gallery exhibition of Lundy's artwork, and an opening night party in one of his most celebrated buildings. Adding to the festivities will be private access to iconic Sarasota modernist homes designed by Lundy’s contemporaries, including Paul Rudolph and Edward “Tim” Seibert.

InterLumi Panama, the global lighting trade show organized by America Expo Group, will be held at ATLAPA Convention Center in Panama from 29 June to 1 July, 2017. David Chipperfield CBE, RA, RDI, RIBA will give the AIANY Cultural Facilities Committee’s annual lecture on excellence in museum design. His eponymous firm has developed a diverse international body of work including some the world’s foremost museums and galleries, ranging from private collections such as the Museo Jumex in Mexico City to public institutions such as the revitalized Neues Museum in Berlin. Chipperfield will provide an overview of his firm’s museum projects, and share his observations about the changing role of the museum.

Choreographies, an installation at the 4th Lisbon Architecture Triennale by Pedro Alonso and Hugo Palmarola, presents the construction of building sites as cultural and political archetypes. By critically contesting comic films and animated cartoons released in the United States and the Soviet Union between 1921 and 1980, it presents construction sites as places in which ideology and imagination were combined through the choreographic movements of hanging steel-beams in the US, and flying concrete-panels in the USSR. These building components symbolize the construction of the modern world, the technological optimism of industrialization, the relevance of the building process over the completed building, and the standing of workers—welders, riveters and crane operators—against the vanishing figure of the architect.

2016/2017 Hyde Lecture Series opens another exciting chapter for the design and planning disciplines as speakers take a fresh, in-depth look at the latest developments in their respective fields.

Text via Blain|Southern. For her first exhibition with Blain|Southern, Chiharu Shiota will create a new site-specific monumental installation in the Berlin gallery, eight years after she last exhibited in her home city.

Shiota is primarily known for her immersive installations, such as The Key in the Hand, with which she represented Japan at the Venice Biennale in 2015. Weaving intricate networks of yarn, the artist creates new visual planes as if she were painting in mid-air.

The installation Uncertain Journey fills the gallery’s vast central atrium with dense webs of red yarn – seemingly growing from above, reaching down towards the skeletal hulls of boats which rest on the gallery floor below. The colour of blood, the nexus of yarn is laden with symbolism, for the artist it alludes to the interior of the body and the complex network of neural connections in the brain. Enclosed by the canopy overhead, the boat carcasses raise existential questions of fate and belonging, evoking ideas that can be as complex as the tangled yarn itself.

Can a building help stem the tide of large epidemics?

In 2010, in the midst of the world’s worst cholera outbreak in over a century, MASS Design Group was challenged to design a cholera treatment center where the construction process, as well as the finished building, could address the underlying structural and social conditions that allow cholera to thrive.

This is the subject of Design that Heals, a new documentary that portrays the challenges, innovations, and triumph of the project, proving that, “Architecture and health are inseparable.” (Dr. Jean-William Pape, GHESKIO founder)
