Iris Ceramica Group, world leader in the design of innovative solutions and of unique ceramic materials, is promoting the international contest “Local Cultures in Global Settings”, curated by UAE Modern, fostering knowledge of a multitude of unique roots and identities, with Dubai as a symbolic place of global discourse. Dubai is not only a thematic focus but also the final destination of the international contest, for which the winners will be announced during the Dubai Design Week.

How does multiculturalism influence the context and how, in turn, are individual cultural identities influenced by the context? Can design generate new meanings, separating the threads that once wove individual cultures and reassembling them in a process incorporating needs, knowledge and new technologies? These are questions that inspired the contest. 

The Reimagining of the Dallas Museum of Art International Design Competition has revealed its shortlisted entries. Announced by the Dallas Museum of Art (DMA), the six finalists selected from a total of 154 submissions worldwide are David Chipperfield Architects, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Johnston Marklee, Michael Maltzan Architecture, Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos, and Weiss/Manfredi. The museum just released images of the competition finalists’ design concepts, and the public is invited to comment on the different proposals.

Five finalists have been shortlisted in the competition to design the new Griegkvartalet Theater in Bergen, Norway. The project is set to be a cultural powerhouse in Western Norway, hosting multidisciplinary forms of art, including opera, musical theater, ballet, dance, concerts, and conferences. The competition emphasizes integration with the surroundings, urban space, energy efficiency, and feasibility.

The shortlisted teams include Henning Larsen Architects, Snøhetta, Zaha Hadid Architects, MAD arkitekter and Kengo Kuma, and the Nordic Office of Architecture includes Arkkitehtitoimisto ALA in the architecture subjects. Each studio was selected from 32 participants worldwide and will be filtered into three winners in the coming stages in the fall of 2023. Ultimately, by March 2024, one winner will be selected and receive the official service contract to begin construction.

Mecanoo, in collaboration with Meng Architects and LOLA Landscape Architects, has been selected as the winner of the international design competition for the design of the Shenzhen Guangming Scientist Valley. The aim of the project is to create a facility for research and innovation that is also engaging for a larger public while also being integrated and coexisting with the surrounding natural environment. The project includes an area of approximately 1.2 square kilometers located in a strategic place to serve the larger scientific community, from Guangdong, to Hong Kong, and Macao.

The world-renowned A' Design Award & Competition has opened its Call for Early Submissions to all those who would like to submit their designs in advance for the 2023-2024 period. The annual award recognizes designs in over 100 competition categories which are voted on by an international grand jury panel of scholars, journalists and design professionals. With a mission to inspire and recognize good design around the world, the A' Design Award is an all-rounder competition that seeks to promote the best of the many design professions and practices.

Which are the criteria for the regeneration of a former industrial site? Restore to Impact, the international Call for Ideas powered by the Chiesi biopharmaceutical Group, aims to identify innovative, evolutionary and transversal concepts as guidelines for the future regeneration project of its historic industrial site in via Palermo in Parma. In this context, it has defined its guiding principles to evaluate the concepts submitted by April 30th.

Flexibility, adaptability over time, and porosity are understood as the ability to dialogue with the physical and social context. In addition, the quality of the landscape and public spaces are also related to connectivity and sustainability in technological, environmental, economic, business and innovative terms. 

Sumayya Vally, renowned architect and Principal of the Johannesburg/London-based studio Counterspace, won the competition to design the new Asiat-Darse pedestrian bridge in Vilvoorde, Belgium. Counterspace's design concept delved into the history and impact of Paul Panda Farnana, a significant yet under-appreciated figure in the city, who studied the intricate connections between past and future generations of migrant individuals and communities. "The studio has been praised for its research-led approach, which led to the discovery of Farnana and his work, and for shedding light on an otherwise overlooked, vital part of the city’s history". Construction on the Asiat-Darse pedestrian bridge is set to commence in April 2024, with an estimated completion date of December 2025.

The architecture festival Hello Wood will be back in July, bringing together designers, educators, students and young creatives from all over the world. This year the Hello Wood Festival is moving to a new, fascinating location: the “post-apocalyptic” crater of Haláp Mountain in Hungary. At this inspiring venue, participants will build for 8 days, which will be followed by a two-day music festival called Kráter. Lectures by invited renowned designers and architects (Karim Rashid, Arthur Mamou-Mani, Numen/For Use collective) will enrich the program.
