International VELUX Award for Students of Architecture

The International VELUX Award for students of architecture is a competition that wants to encourage and challenge students to explore the theme of daylight - and to create a deeper understanding of this ever-relevant source of energy, light and life. The award encourages projects that celebrate the privilege of being a student with curiosity and with the willingness to think “out of the box” – as well as consider the social, sociological and environmental dimension of daylight.

Global Citizen: The Architecture of Moshe Safdie

World-renowned architect and 2015 AIA Gold Medal–winner Moshe Safdie FAIA’s masterful use of light and geometry is explored in Global Citizen. This international exhibition is a retrospective that spans decades, from Safdie’s formative period in the 1960s and early 1970s to his recent projects around the world. Featuring more than 100 objects, including drawings, sketches, videos, photographs, and scale models, Safdie’s architecture is portrayed not only as visual art but also as a medium for advancing social, political, and cultural goals.

This exhibition is curated by Donald Albrecht and designed by Nader Tehrani.

Graham Foundation Announces 49 Grant Winners for 2015

The Graham Foundation has announced the recipients of its 2015 Grants—49 innovative architectural projects from a global range of “major museum retrospectives, multi-media installations, site-specific commissions, and documentary films to placemaking initiatives, e-publications, and academic journals.”

All of these newly funded project designs, chosen from over 200 submissions, show great promise in respect to impact on the greater architectural field. Overall, the Graham Foundation has awarded the projects $496,500 in an effort to help chart new territory in the future of architecture.

Out of the 49 projects, 12 are “public programs and exhibitions that will coincide with the inaugural Chicago Biennial, opening this fall.”

Open Call: Sejong-daero Historic Cultural Space Design Competition

The Seoul Metropolitan Government has announced its Sejong-daero Historic Cultural Space Design Competition, which seeks creative designs for the site of the former National Tax Service Building, as well as a greater conceptual blueprint for the central Seoul area.

6 Finalists Announced for ULI’s 2015 Urban Open Space Award

The Urban Land Institute (ULI) has selected six finalists for the 2015 Urban Open Space Award competition, which recognizes public spaces that benefit and revitalize their surrounding communities. This was the first year that ULI expanded the program to include global submissions.

“The submissions from this year are representative of how quality urban open space has become more than just an amenity for cities,” said jury chair Michael Covarrubias. “The international diversity of the projects is reflective of how developers continually work to meet global demand by the public for the inclusion of healthy places in cities.” See all of the finalists after the break.
