‘Under One Roof’ Experimental Pavilion Competition Winning Proposal / Kengo Kuma & Associates + Holzer Kobler Architekturen

Kengo Kuma & Associates, together with Holzer Kobler Architekturen, won the architectural design competition launched in 2012 to develop Cosandey Square at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Their project, “Under One Roof,” will unite an experimental Art & Sciences space and a demonstration pavilion under a single, long stone roof at the Montreux Jazz Lab. To connect science and culture at EPFL, the university’s campus will boast a novel “backbone” that stretches the length of Cosandey Square. More images and architects’ description after the break.

Lignum Pavilion / Frei + Saarinen Architekten

Designed by Frei+ Saarinen Architekten, the aim of the Lignum Pavilion is to inform the public about the possibilities of wood applications in the construction field. Conceived as a training and information center, the project embodies the expressive potential of wood in very modern key. The fully digitalized production process made it possible to optimize both the quantity of material used and the assembly system, resulting in a considerable reduction of costs and making the most of the strength characteristics of wood. Venice Biennale 2012: Switzerland Pavilion

After being nominated to represent Switzerland at the 2012 architecture biennale in Venice, architect and university professor Miroslav Šik decided to join forces with two other swiss firms -Knapkiewicz + Fickert from Zurich and Miller & Maranta from Basel- with whom he has been working together for many years. They have created what they call “an ensemble and atmosphere approach to urban architecture”, and decided to illustrate these concepts by putting together images of their own buildings and projects to create a collage-style exhibition.
