Zaha Hadid’s Only Private Residential Project Rises Above A Russian Forest

On a hillside forest outside of Moscow, amongst 65-foot-high (20-meter-high) pine and birch trees, sits the only private house to be designed and built by Zaha Hadid in her lifetime. With a form defined by its natural surroundings, the Capital Hill Residence is divided into two components, one merging with the sloping hillside, and another “floating” 72 feet (22 meters) above ground to unlock spectacular views across the Russian forested landscape.

a+u 2016:05 "Beginning with the House – 65 Architects’ Visions from Early Residential Works" (Special Issue)

This special edition of a+u takes an overview of early works, mostly houses, by 65 prominent architects around the world, including: Álvaro Siza, Richard Rogers, Glenn Murcutt, Valerio Olgiati, Lacaton & Vassal, Caruso St John, Smiljan Radic, ELEMENTAL, and Pascal Flammer. We asked each architect two questions – the visions they had when they designed the house, and how that vision has evolved over time.

Video: Inside Sou Fujimoto's Pavilion at HOUSE VISION Tokyo 2016

In this video, French architect and filmmaker Vincent Hecht takes us inside “Rental Space Tower,” Sou Fujimoto’s pavilion at HOUSE VISION Tokyo 2016. Designed in partnership with residential leasing and management company Daito Trust Construction, the structure aims to challenge the conventional typologies of rental housing, maximizing the amount of shared space within the complex.

Check out the video for a look inside the structure, and continue reading for more on the concept behind the design.
