A growing network of architects and urban planners are busy tackling the challenges posed by realities like unprecedented urban growth, climate change and conflict as opportunities to build a more just and sustainable future. As such, resilience, sustainable urban development, the effects of mass migration on cities, community participation, post-disaster response and disaster risk reduction are key issues within our master program that deserve a spotlight beyond the classroom and that today, more than ever, resonate with urban practitioners and the general public.

Completed in January 1977, Richard Rogers’s and Renzo Piano’s Centre Georges Pompidou was initially received skeptically by critics, but the public soon embraced Beaubourg as an essential—and well loved—Paris institution. Francesco Dal Co’s lively intellectual biography, Centre Pompidou: Renzo Piano, Richard Rogers, and the Making of a Modern Monument (Nov. 29, Yale University Press) explores the Pompidou’s history and the reasons for its success, from its genesis as a politically calculated response to the turbulent 1968 student protests to the role played by architects in its construction, as well as the historical influences and the engineering solutions that inform its design. As Dal Co reveals, a key reason for the Centre Pompidou’s lasting significance lies in its ability to channel architectural memory, connecting it powerfully to Paris’s historic urban fabric.

WSBE17 Hong Kong is the world conference of the 2015-2017 cycle of the renowned SBE Conference Series, it is the most influential and well-attended Sustainable Built Conference held every 3 years. The One Heart Foundation is calling all architects interested in contributing to a life changing international design project. The Australian based ‘for-purpose’ organisation has announced a design competition offering entrants the opportunity to design and masterplan an eco-village for abandoned and orphaned children in Kenya.

Regarding the renewal project of Ginza Line whose 90th anniversary will come in 2017, Tokyo Metro Co., Ltd. has been holding a series of design competitions since December 2012, which invites various ideas to make the Ginza Line more attractive.

Following the last competition for “Business Area,” the 5th edition of TOKYO METRO GINZA LINE STATION DESIGN COMPETITION will feature “TREND AREA” of the Aoyama-itchome, Gaiemmae, and Omote-sando stations. Tokyo Metro invites proposals widely.

Colegio de Arquitectos de Chile and the XX Bienal de Arquitectura y Urbanismo de Chile curatorial team, invite international professionals to participate in the exhibition, to be held a second consecutive year at the Parque Cultural de Valparaíso. Aspiring towards a biennial open to citizens rather than closed to the discipline, the biennial is titled “Diálogos Impostergables”, and for the first time will include citizen's initiatives.

Update (11/28/2016): Given the large interest generated by the call to participate in “Diálogos Impostergables,” the curatorial team has extended the deadline for submission of material to Monday, December 12th, 2016.

Thinking about what we consider unpostponable from an architectural and urban perspective presents us with the urgent necessity to work with those that have resided at the margin, who have not seen their necessities and aspirations reflected in the city. It is fundamental to generate a dialogue that includes different forces that make up our cities, establishing a link with other countries of the global South and those that have historically been postponed.

From reTHINKING competitions we are happy to announce our new competition:“What's Up Paris?” A city like Paris is intense, full of tourists, workers, cars ... is a place in constant motion, with changes of atmosphere, with people walking and taking pictures. It is the perfect city for having a coffee and watch people go by, watch tourists spellbound with its architecture, businessmen who run to take the subway or Parisians who simply walk their city.

The Ville de Montréal (City of Montreal, Qc, Canada) is launching an international competition for the design of worksite information modules.

The purpose of the modules—prototypes of which will be installed in summer 2017 on three specific sites—is to mitigate the adverse impacts of worksites on the quality of life of residents and the economic vitality of surrounding areas.

Filming architecture comes to Lisbon, Portugal! This is an academic itinerant workshop about architecture representation and narratives through cinematography, and will be part of the closing activities of the 2016 Lisbon Architecture Triennale. As the final product, students will produce a short movie filmed at a Museu dos Coches, a paradigmatic building designed by Paulo Mendes da Rocha and Ricardo Bak Gordon.

Ideasforward wants to give young creative people from around the world the opportunity to express their views on the future of societies through their innovative and visionary proposals. We are an experimental platform seeking progressive ideas that reflect on emerging themes. The eco design, sustainable architecture, new materials, concepts, and technologies are compelling issues in the societies of the future and the involvement of the whole community is imperative. In an era of globalization where communication was dominated by the technological revolution, there is the need to rethink the cities and how Man relates in a global World as well as rethink the economic, social and cultural patterns of contemporary societies.

In 2016 the Festival was visited by not less than 20 000 visitors and was committed to raising awareness in schools.75 kindergarten and primary classes took part in this new program.

The twelfth edition of the Festival will take place from 13th June to 18th June. The FAV in La Grande Motte will take place from 17th to 25th June 2017. 

The FAV will keep to aware a wide public to architecture, to highlight a young generation of architects and to discover places from the urban heritage.
