PREMISE

The aim of this competition is to encourage students to brainstorm design solutions for issues that plague the world and mankind. The problem can be of any nature ranging from design problems to environmental problems. You have no constraints as to what you can design or redesign, it can be a product, a building, a space, a neighborhood, a city, or even a new type of technology.

The Paris Agreement is an international treaty on climate change. Adopted by 196 countries in Paris on December 12, 2015, it entered into force on November 4, 2016. Its goal is to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius—preferably 1.5 degrees—compared to pre-industrial levels. To achieve this long-term temperature goal, countries aim to peak greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible to achieve a climate-neutral planet by mid-century. This entails reducing domestic greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40% by 2030 relative to 1990 levels.

MICRO was born in 2020 as a reflective process that identified the artistic potential brewing within architecture schools that had remained anonymous, aiming, furthermore, to encourage all students to broaden their horizons beyond the purely architectural. What is the sense of architecture in virtual worlds and what can architects produce and implement that goes beyond game design? I am sure we will get super interesting ideas from our students and that architecture and it's meaning and power goes far beyond what we see with classical architects going viral. Virtual reality is not a marketing hub. And architects therefor should not abuse it as such but implement basic ideas of architecture adapted to the gained freedom of not being bound to real life. Shelter, expression of ideas, form defined by use, all these criteria still exist and these are the challenges in any world.

The Spanish Council of Architects (CSCAE) has launched a competition for the design of the sculpture to be awarded to the winners of the Architecture Awards. COMPAC, as the official sponsor of the awards, will provide participants with the materials to create the piece.
