“Untold Stories from an Eclectic, Exceptional Practice” Presentation by David Rockwell
In conjunction with its current exhibition The Landmarks of New York, the Parrish Art Museum will host an illustrated presentation by multi-talented, award winning architect David Rockwell titled “Untold Stories from an Eclectic, Exceptional Practice.” A brief discussion between Rockwell, who founded Rockwell Group in 1984 to focus on a diverse array of projects that range from hotels to hospitals, restaurants to airport terminals, and Broadway set designs to consumer products, and exhibition curator Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel will follow the talk. The program will take place Thursday, August 23, at 6:30 pm. Tickets are $5 for Parrish members, $10 for nonmembers. Reservations are strongly recommended. Gehry Technologies to Transform the Building Industry through Technology
Update: The AIA has expressed their support for Gehry Technologies’ strategic alliance (reported last night on ArchDaily). “We applaud this enterprise by Gehry Technologies and the Board who are comprised of many AIA members because it is estimated that as much as 30% to as much as 50% of all time, money, materials and resources that go into a construction project do not add value to the final product,” said AIA President, Clark Manus, FAIA. “The AIA has long been advocating for tools such as Business Information Modeling and methodologies like Integrated Project Delivery that can help reduce the inefficiencies in construction projects. We are anxious to see the progress though this effort that will be beneficial for both the industry and clients.”
Today Frank Gehry, co-founder and chairman of Gehry Technologies (GT), announced plans to further his vision to ‘transform the building industry and the practice of design’. In an effort to redirect the profession back to solving both clients’ and communities’ problems Gehry has gathered together some of the world’s most prominent designers: David Childs, Massimo Colomban, Zaha Hadid, Greg Lynn, Laurie Olin, Wolf D. Prix, David Rockwell, Moshe Safdie, Matthias Schuler, Patrik Schumacher, Ben van Berkel, and Richard Saul Wurman to serve on Gehry Technologies’ board of advisors.

Lawrence Israel Prize Awarded to David Rockwell
Awarded by the Interior Design Department at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), the prestigious Lawrence Israel Prize for 2011 has been awarded to David Rockwell. Given annually to an individual or firm whose ideas and work enrich FIT Interior Design students’ course of study. Past winners include Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis, Billie Tsien, and Charles Gwathmey.
David Rockwell is the founder of Rockwell Group based in New York City with a satellite office in Madrid. The firm’s project types range from master planning, strategy, building to interior design, set design, and custom furniture design. Current projects and completed work by Rockwell includes: Imagination Playground in downtown New York City; the JetBlue Terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport; and the Nobu restaurants in New York, Dubai and Hong Kong; Sets for Broadway’s Catch Me If You Can; the new restaurant Untitled at the Whitney Museum of American Art; the first Yotel outside of Europe, in Times Square; W Hotels in Paris and Singapore; a renovation of Los Angeles’ legendary Hotel Bel Air; and the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Society at Lincoln Center.
Recipients of the award are invited to give a public lecture. On Thursday, April 28th Rockwell will discuss his professional journey, current Rockwell Group projects, and his latest explorations using technology to create more powerful spatial experiences. The lecture is free and open to the public and will be held at 6:00pm in the Katie Murphy Amphitheatre at FIT.
A New Take on Play / David Rockwell / Imagination Playground
A week from today, an intense 5 year long research project will finally be open at the South Street Seaport in Manhattan. For the grand opening, there will be lots of screaming and yelling, probably even some pushing and shoving…after all, it is a playground. Yet, this is not just an “ordinary” playground. Corey Kilgannon’s article for the New York Times this morning shared some information about the new playground, which is part of the Imagination Playground project. Designed by architect David Rockwell, the first contemporary American architect to address this issue of play, the playground’s concept focuses on “encouraging child-directed, unstructured free play. With a focus on loose parts, Imagination Playground offers a changing array of elements that allows children to constantly reconfigure their environment and to design their own course of play,” explained the playground’s website.
