Arquitectura en Corto invites you to the Espacio Arquia in Madrid (c/ Tutor, 16) on Thursday, September 17, at 7:00 PM for the screening of the short film Amarar. The title refers to a traditional Mallorcan technique of treating wood by immersing it in water to increase its durability. This term has become the name of a sustainable design project that transforms native pine trees into contemporary furniture of high artisanal value. In collaboration with the University of the Balearic Islands, the project also researches the use of this wood in construction. The initiative is led by Francisco Cifuentes and Sebastián Martorell, founding partners of the Palma de Mallorca-based firm Aulets Arquitectes. "We have a vast forest mass on the islands," explains Cifuentes, "but 95% of the forests are abandoned. At the same time, we are importing 70,000 tons of wood for construction. Architects must build with materials that can regenerate local ecosystems. A change in the model is necessary." Directed by Marc Hierro, the short film presents several solutions proposed by Aulets Arquitectes and other project collaborators to promote responsible forest management and utilize wood as a durable, recyclable material with full traceability. Following the screening, a discussion will feature Francisco Cifuentes, Sebastián Martorell, and Albert Cuchí, author of the article "Construir el territorio," recently published in the El Croquis monograph dedicated to the architectural work of Aulets Arquitectes. "What Aulets pursues," asserts Cuchí, "is the recovery of the territory as the authentic field of action for architecture, maintaining an appropriate relationship with resources, ensuring the renewability of extraction processes, and weaving construction together with other social activities to build an ecological society."

The Fundació Mies van der Rohe launches the call for the 5th Lilly Reich Grant for Equality in Architecture with the aim of continuing to generate research and debate on modern and contemporary architecture. This is done in dialogue with current paradigm shifts, paying special attention to diversity, inclusion, and the different dimensions of sustainability.

BACKGROUND
The Loja Urban Laboratory is a multi-stakeholder, creative, and innovative space that seeks to support and strengthen local public policy for the comprehensive improvement of neighborhoods and public space through a holistic and sustainable approach. The laboratory’s work contributes to building an inclusive, safe, and equitable city by strengthening an intervention model for peripheral urban neighborhoods, promoting planned and sustainable urban development while optimizing land use and occupancy. The core focus of comprehensive neighborhood improvement is based on the recovery, activation, and appropriation of public space through citizen participation, promoting universal access and enjoyment for all as an exercise of rights, and as a foundation for the right to the city.

Every year, hundreds of students graduate as architects across Colombia, producing projects and theses that reflect their personal interests, research, and motivations. Unfortunately, once their studies conclude, these projects often remain buried in a laptop folder or on a library shelf. We know, however, that many of these theses address fundamental issues in contemporary architectural practice, not only in Colombia but globally.

For this reason, we are launching the third edition of our open call for graduation theses in Colombia. The Mayor's Office of Quito, through the Metropolitan Institute of Urban Planning (IMPU), invites architects, urban planners, and other professionals to form teams with residents and neighborhood representatives in Quito to participate in four Ideas Competitions. These competitions aim to implement the New City Model proposed in the Quito 2040 Vision, selecting winning design proposals for four sustainable neighborhoods.

Nearly 5 million pesos in prize money will be awarded in the 31st edition of the “Arte en Vivo” competition, established by Librería Nacional. The 2nd edition of the Alentejo Architecture Award has been launched by the Alentejo Regional Section of the Order of Architects (OASRALT).

The deadline for the national short film competition has been extended to September 25. The competition invites Chilean filmmakers—or residents—to submit works up to 30 minutes in length across three categories.

The Architecture Film Festival Chile will hold its 5th edition in November 2020 in an online format.

Eligible works for the second edition of the Oscar Niemeyer Award for Latin American Architecture include those recognized by a REDBAAL-member biennial or selected by a national association or college of architects in the aforementioned Latin American countries where no REDBAAL-affiliated biennial exists.
