Call for Entries: [Moscow] Circus School

The aim of this International Competition is to design a new Circus School in Moscow to serve as an academy for aspiring circus performers. The architecture of this new building should reflect contemporary design tendencies. The proposal must not only attend to the specific function but also take into consideration the urban context and impact.

Architect Adam Reed Tucker’s LEGO® models of architectural landmarks are currently on display at the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, Iowa. Featuring everything from the Empire State Building to the Burj Khalifa, the models are built using only the “simplest bricks and hinges.”

Watch Bucky Fuller Debate Hans Hollein at Storefront For Art and Architecture's "Closed Worlds" Conference

On Saturday, February 27th, Storefront for Art and Architecture and The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of The Cooper Union will jointly present a public conference, Closed World: Encounters That Never Happened. Presenters and discussants will engage in debate and discussion and the history and future of closed systems in architecture and design. 
The format of this conference invites participants to impersonate a historical figures who have been major contributors to the discourse of closed systems. Figures include Reyner Banham, Buckminster Fuller, Hans Hollein, Neil Armstrong, Jacques Cousteau, and Walt Disney, among others.

Debate: On the Chicago Architecture Biennial

AAgora is a newly-founded critical architecture debate platform at the Architectural Association in London, which aims to shed light on relevant architectural topics. These debates take the form of an open-table discussion which encourages the audience to participate at any time. AAgora's second debate will be "On the Chicago Biennial" - On Biennials, and how we define contemporary architecture.

Exhibition: Savage Architecture: Gian Piero Frassinelli, Superstudio and 2A+P/A

On the 26th of February 2016 the project Savage Architecture — an exhibition at Architectural Association of London and a book published by Black Square both curated by Davide Sacconi — will be presented in a symposium at the Italian Cultural Institute of London. The project recounts the research at the intersection between architecture and anthropology developed in the last fifty years by Gian Piero Frassinelli (former member of Superstudio) and his recent collaboration with 2A+P/A (architectural practice based in Rome).

Exhibition: Paimio Sanatorium – Light, air and health

Paimio Sanatorium, an early major work by Alvar Aalto, is the subject of an exhibition on show in the Gallery at the Alvar Aalto Museum from 12 February to 10 April 2016. The exhibition is based on a conservation management plan prepared for the first time in Finland. The plan involves the most detailed investigation so far of the hospital, which was built for tuberculosis patients.

MadeinSpain_USA: Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos to Lecture at RICE in Houston

Next February 22nd at 5.30 pm, Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos will start MadeinSpain5_USA lecture series at RICE School of Architecture in Houston, where they will show the most significant features of Spanish architecture related to their own work. One day later, on Tuesday at 12PM, there will be a round table with Fuensanta Nieto and Enrique Sobejano, attended by the renowned architect and professor Carlos Jimenez and Martha Thorne - Executive Director of the Pritzker Architecture Prize - as representative of the Foundation for Contemporary Architecture.

Open Call: Contribute to Egypt's Venice Pavilion Exhibition, "REFRAMING BACK//IMPERATIVE CONFRONTATIONS"

Alejandro Aravena’s statement “Reporting from the Front” for the 15th Biennale di Architettura di Venezia invites the national pavilions to share experiences about architecture that through intelligence, intuition, or both at the same time, are able to escape the status quo - presenting stories that, despite the world's difficulties, have proven successful. The head of Urban Harmony-Egyptian Ministry of Culture has announced that "REFRAMING BACK//IMPERATIVE CONFRONTATIONS" has been selected to represent Egypt at the Biennale di Venezia 2016. The project team, led by Architect Ahmad Hilal and composed of Eslam Salem, Gabriele Secchi, Luca Borlenghi and Mostafa Salem, is trying to explore various stories of Architecture narrating the difficulties and challenges in the Egyptian built environment.

Closed Worlds Exhibition to Open at Storefront for Art and Architecture

On Tuesday, February 16th, Storefront for Art and Architecture will open Closed Worlds, an exhibition curated by Lydia Kallipoliti that presents an archive of 41 living prototypes of closed resource regeneration systems built over the last century. The archive represents an unexplored genealogy of closed systems in architectural practice. Call for Applications: Bauhaus Lab 2016

Bauhaus Lab 2016 follows the travel routes of Walter Gropius’ desk. Designed as part of a cohesive ensemble for the first Bauhaus exhibition in 1923, then in use in the director’s room in the Bauhaus building in Dessau before being temporarily located in the Lawn Road Flats in London. Today the original is found in Lincoln, Massachusetts (USA).

The Bauhaus Lab explores these transatlantic movements and in doing so makes the iconic desk itself a player in a constantly changing set of locations and social environments. The Lab will yield artistic and curatorial ideas about the communication of object-based histories of exile.

The workshop is entitled “EcoArchitecture: Green Buildings for UAE” delivered by internationally renowned architect Ken Yeang.

Open Call: "Fear of Columns" Competition

In light of the 30th anniversary since the reconstruction of the Barcelona Pavilion The Mies van der Rohe Foundation is calling the competition "Fear of Columns." The competition's purpose is the temporary recreation of the eight columns and two pedestals that presided over the Pavilion in 1929, in the framework of the 30-year anniversary since the reconstruction of this iconic work by the German architect.

The competition is searching innovative and sustainable ideas for the development of the valley in Beylikdüzü. Competitors are invited to develop visionary concepts that focus on the whole valley and on the focal points determined.
