Alan Ward, FASLA, masterfully uses the photographic process to see and interpret the essence of designed landscapes. In this program, he describes his process for capturing space, texture, bright light, and dappled shade in mostly black-and-white images, challenging us to see landscapes with new eyes. Re-Ball! is an open design competition to turn 650,000 3-inch, white, translucent plastic balls into a site-specific installation in the Dupont Underground’s 14,000-square-foot east platform. The balls were previously part of the National Building Museum’s blockbuster summer destination The BEACH. This project is part of a concerted effort to create a more vibrant and integrated urban environment on our main streets. Significant investment is being done to improve the streets and sidewalks and the City wishes to expand upon this work by implementing a façade improvement program. Dexter Street is an excellent example of a vibrant urban “Main Street,” with many successful businesses and delicious restaurants. The City believes that these façade improvements will have the opportunity to take the street “over the top” and pave the path toward a successful attraction for neighboring communities and tourists, in addition to improving the experience for residents.

The theme of Parallelism in Architecture, Environment and Computing Techniques (PACT) 2016 explores the relations between computational design in architecture, organizational and global, ever-changing and pervasive contexts. The Brazilian artist Roberto Burle Marx (1909-1994) is one of the most prominent landscape architects of the twentieth century. His famous projects range from the remarkable mosaic pavements on the seaside avenue of Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach to the multitude of gardens that embellish Brasilia, one of several-large scale projects he executed in collaboration with famed architect Oscar Niemeyer. Although his landscape design work is renowned worldwide, the artist’s work in other media remains little known. Roberto Burle Marx: Brazilian Modernist therefore explores the richness and breadth of the artist’s oeuvre—from landscape architecture to painting, from sculpture to theater design, from tapestries to jewelry.

In 2016, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded the Society of Architectural Historians (SAH) a grant of $60,800 to administer the SAH/Mellon Author Awards. These awards are designed to provide financial relief to scholars who are publishing their first monograph on the history of the built environment, and who are responsible for paying for rights and permissions for images or for commissioning maps, charts or line drawings in their publications. The publication of a monograph continues to be the most valued demonstration of scholarly competence for career advancement and recognition in the humanities. Unfortunately, many authors today must provide both a fully realized text and the financial resources for its image program. The cost for image rights and licensing, especially for digital publications, can be prohibitively expensive.
The Metropolitan Government of Seoul announces an international competition in order to establish a music-led cultural complex by 2018, in which domestic and oversea specialists from various fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban design are invited to participate. The government have established a program including the necessary facilities and the scale considering citizen participation and publicity for the realization of the proposed operation program.

Anish Kapoor, a British-Indian sculptor, now owns the exclusive rights within the field of art to Vantablack, currently the world’s darkest material. Developed by a team of scientists at Surrey NanoSystems in 2014, Vantablack absorbs all light and creates a crease free abyss which is often compared to a black hole. Other artists, such as Christian Furr, had intended to use Vantablack in a series of paintings, but no longer can due to Kapoor’s monopolization. “All the best artists have had a thing for pure black — Turner, Manet, Goya,” he told Daily Mail. “This black is like dynamite in the art world. We should be able to use it. It isn’t right that it belongs to one man.”
