SCI-Arc is pleased to announce MAIN EVENT 13 returns to its Downtown Los Angeles Art District campus (960 E 3rd St, Los Angeles, CA 90013) supporting their endowment scholarship fund. This year, MAIN EVENT 13 will showcase SCI-Arc’s annual schoolwide exhibition of final thesis projects and presentations of its most talented and promising young minds. This most anticipated event will also will also recognize two stand-out pioneers in the field of design and architecture - famed Pritzker-Prize-winning architect and founder of Morphosis, Thom Mayne and arts advocate Merry Norris, founder of Merry Norris Contemporary Art.

The ShiftxDesign Conference at Harvard, this February 19th, is an annual exploration of all things design. Launched in 2012, the conference is a collaborative effort between student groups at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, Harvard Business School, and Harvard College - and the only cross-school event of its kind. The event brings together creative thinkers, design luminaries, experts from a variety of backgrounds, and students to engage in and reinterpret the design process.

The Faculty of architecture at KU Leuven, which last year featured on QS's Top 100 Universities in the World for Architecture, is Belgium's largest and most established university. The following essay, by Dag Boutsen—Dean of the School—and Kris Scheerlinck, examines cyclical learning in architectural education. SCI-Arc, one of the few remaining schools whose undergraduate program culminates in a thesis project, asks students to locate their position within the discipline, theorize a problem around that position, create a project that tests their theory, and ultimately to present and defend that position to an audience of future peers and professionals. It’s a cathartic endeavor that is to some degree fraught with anxiety, as defining a position and speculating on the future of the discipline can be a rather daunting endeavor.

Graduation often leaves a void in a new architect’s life. After five years or more (lets face it, usually more) of being with the same friends, colleagues and teachers, it’s only natural that the transition from academic to professional life is accompanied by a feeling of nostalgia for long discussions in college corridors, late nights designing together, parties, and, above all, a student routine.

The most common route after receiving a degree is facing the (savage) job market. Finding an internship and becoming an architect, finding a job in a new office, and spending some time getting to know the insides of studios, offices, and architectural firms seems to be one of the options that most interests new architects. The idea of starting your own business in the long-term future seems to be adequate compensation for those years of dedication to projects that are not always tasteful or aligned with the ideals of those who have just left college.

The University of California, Irvine has selected LMN Architects and Hathaway Dinwiddie Construction to design and build a new $46 million classroom and office building project. In the campus’s central greenspace, the new 70,000-square-foot building will promote diversity, group learning, and social interaction.

LMN’s creative approach of unlocking the site and rearranging the program led to a bold design solution that enhances the overall experience for both students and faculty, said UCI Campus Architect Brian Pratt, LEED AP. We are delighted with the results.

Cardiff City Council has just approved the third and latest phase of Cardiff University's £300 million Innovation Campus. Hawkins\Brown and HOK each designed one building for the project, which will bring together researchers, students, investors, and businesses to work on technological innovations and new enterprises that aim to drive economic growth. The project is the latest development in Cardiff University's vision of embedding innovation within the university's fabric and generating a self-sustaining cycle of economic growth for the community as a whole.

Little Architect is a program at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. Created in 2013, the program is focused on teaching architecture to primary school-age children, obtaining amazing results with more than 2,400 children from different backgrounds receiving architectural lessons. They are especially focused on running their program in low-income areas and state schools in London.

"Our responsibility as architects is not just to design but also to bring architecture to society and to create an awareness about urban issues and contemporary architecture within the people who inhabit it," says Dolores Victoria Ruiz Garrido, author and director of the program.

We are open to people with a diverse backgrounds that relate to the formation of our urban places – including architects, urban planners, landscape architects, economists, artists, sociologists, etc.

Explore architecture and interior design through a three-day hands-on design workshop in which you will create your own micro-housing unit—the new trend in innovative housing.

In this Learning By Design workshop you will have the opportunity to work with professional architects, tour an architecture firm, design and create a 3D model, and present your work to a panel of professionals. This workshop is for teenagers aged 13 to 16; no experience is necessary, but register now, as space is limited.

Carnegie Mellon University's chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) will welcome hundreds of top architecture students and young professionals to Pittsburgh for the largest Quad Conference in the organization's history. The multi-day conference will explore urban renewal through the lenses of technology, sustainability, public interest design, and the arts using Pittsburgh as a powerful example of post-industrial resilience. The conference's keynote speakers include James Ramsey of RAAD Studio and The Lowline, controversial Braddock Mayor and US Senate Candidate John Fetterman, real estate crowdfunding platform founder Eve Picker, architect and artist Dee Briggs, educator John Folan, and many more.

The PERI Foundation have announced the winners of their 10-day “Space for Future Education” workshop in Dagestan, Russia. Organized in conjunction with the Moscow School of Architecture, the workshop selected 30 young architects under 30 from a pool of over 100 applicants from around the globe to develop concepts for a new PERI facility, the Perimeter Center for Culture and Education, in historic Makhachkala overlooking the Caspian Sea.

With help from mentors including Yaroslav Kovalchuk, a teacher from the Moscow School of Architecture; Hiroki Matsuura of MASA Architects; and Narine Tyutcheva and Peter Popov from Russia’s Rozhdestvenka Architectural Studio, 8 teams of 3 to 4 architects developed plans for the new building, containing offices, classrooms, conference rooms, coworking space, an innovation lab and a cafe.
