We invite international architects, planners, designers, philosophers, thinkers, scientists, companies, educational institutions, research laboratories, think-tanks and students to submit their proposals from April 1st to May 31st, 2019. The Open Call will accept proposals for design projects, research projects and critical essays that will form the core of the “Eyes of the City” exhibition section, that will be hosted in UABB’s main venue.

Design Challenge

On June 12, 2016, the largest and deadliest act of violence affecting LGBTQ+ people, and one of the deadliest terrorist attacks by a single gunman in modern American history occurred at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. A total of 49 people’s lives were taken that night, 68 others were injured, and hundreds were left permanently affected by the trauma.

In the aftermath, the Orlando community and the world came together to prove that love will overcome fear and hatred. Under this banner, the onePULSE Foundation, an educational nonprofit, was created to memorialize this tragedy and ensure that Pulse’s legacy of love, acceptance, and hope will never be lost.

Periferica Workshop: The Open Museum [Architecture + SelfConstruction]

Periferica is an international festival of urban regeneration that will take place in Mazara del Vallo, Sicily, from 1 to 10 August 2019. Open Calls for the 2019 Arica Barroca South Andean Art Festival

The Arica Barroca festival is a cultural celebration honoring the South Andean identity of Arica and Parinacota, a Cultural Landscape of the Americas. This year’s festival theme, "From the Pacific to the Andes: Pirates, Traffickers, and Franciscans," unfolds over three days of celebrating the region's rich essence. The community is invited to participate in over 20 free activities, including specialized talks on history, archaeology, architecture, music, and the visual arts; generative roundtables that entice with the aromas and flavors of heritage cuisine; art workshops to revisit ancestral crafts; Baroque concerts at the Arica Cathedral; and an art and design fair, the Neo Barroca, a showcase inviting local artists to the Plaza Colón to share their work. The festival will take place from May 16 to 18 and is open to the public.

For more than 20 years, The Arhitext Design Foundation has been developing editorial and cultural projects that raise awareness of the national and international state of architecture, urbanism, design and visual arts. The most important projects of the Foundation are the Arhitext Magazine and the Bucharest Triennale, dedicated to the Central and Eastern European region. In October 2019, the Foundation, in partnership with the Romanian Order of Architects and the "Ion Mincu" University of Architecture and Urbanism will organize the third edition of the Bucharest Triennale East Centric Architecture. The main topic of this edition, HOME|any|more|?, proposes an interrogative approach of the possibility of being at home in today's world.

I-Park Accepting Applications for 2018 Architecture/Landscape Design Residencies

I-Park is now accepting applications for its fully-funded four-week summer residencies. Academic proposals can serve as significant intellectual and critical works. The goal of this call is to ensure these projects do not remain tucked away, gathering dust on shelves, and losing their potential to drive real change in our cities and in how we inhabit and perceive our world.

About the Jose Marti Park Redesign RFQ:
Through this RFQ, Van Alen and the City of Miami seek to commission a multi-disciplinary design team for the project that offers the full range of professional urban design, landscape architecture, and engineering services and includes at least one Florida-licensed firm. The design team will work with Van Alen Institute and the City to ensure that this treasured public space serves the present and future needs of the Little Havana community. Innovative and thoughtful design should allow the park to minimize flood impacts to the neighborhood, adapt to sea level rise over time, and enhance waterfront access for residents. Ideally this project results in a solution that can be replicated in other places experiencing similar conditions.

Cities in Asia Summer Program: Studio Singapore-Shanghai, June 24 to July 16

We are pleased to announce that registration for this year’s Cities in Asia Summer Program is now open. The credit-bearing HKU course was established in 2010 to focus on urgent architectural and urban issues confronting Asian cities today. This year, the studio will be traveling to Singapore and Shanghai. The program is an immersive course designed to expose students to these cities through daily learning activities including lectures, seminars, studio crits, field work, firm visits, and design reviews. The nature of work ranges from critical reading of texts and individual assignments, to design and research collaborations. Students will get to interact with professors, researchers, critical practices, think tanks and various local stakeholders, as well as with students from other universities.
