In our present moment, the incessant production of culture and knowledge imparts an important task to the notion of commitment. Knowledge and culture are produced in excess in institutions and popular culture, making it the impossible task of critics and scholars to sift through endless amounts of cultural material and make value judgements. Partly a consequence and a cause of a shift in thinking that began in the 1960s and 1970s, a phenomenon that could be called a democratization of production (of narratives, images, cultures) has had some positive effects for the civil rights movements, leading to the inclusion of underrepresented demographics into fields that were previously hostile to them. However, the consequences of the Postmodern debunking of universal truth (that was necessary for and produced by such a shift in thinking) has carried with it the accompanying erosion of the concept of morality. The last decade has seen a further dismantling of the universal notion of “truth” and its effects in politics—note the great difficulty for contemporary politicians to convincingly assert that something is morally correct and necessary. The statement that “truth is subjective,” once a great tool to undermine the dominant grand narratives of the past, is now freely used in the name of individual freedoms, often without assessing the morality of such freedoms.

Concéntrico 06, the International Festival of Architecture and Design of Logroño, will take place from April 29 to May 3, 2020. The festival invites reflection on the urban environment and the city through architecture and design proposals in various formats.

The Daylight Award 2020, a dual prize for research and architecture, is now open for nominations. The Daylight Award is a great opportunity for the global community of architects and researchers to consider and nominate their colleagues who have expertise in advancing outstanding daylight research and the unique use of daylight in architecture.

Although the field of architecture likes to think it is cutting-edge, adamantly liberal, and on the forefront of history, we still look towards the compulsive tendencies of the glorified visionary, their revolutionary thoughts, illuminating process, and iconic vision. This historiography is, in and of itself, an obsession - fetishizing personas, establishing camps, crafting a storyline that awards persuasion and trend over quality and sincerity. In the longstanding tradition of self-made, winner-take-all fanaticism, now more than ever do we see a craving for attention that is pulling (or rather dragging) the field even further from its core values and closer to soulless squander.

The A’ Design Award was "born out of the desire to underline the best designs and well-designed products." It is an international award whose aim is to provide designers, architects, and innovators from all design fields with a platform to showcase their work and products to a global audience. Be it to find solutions to particular design challenge, or simply to bring joy to a project, the intelligent integration of products into the design process – from the taps in a bathroom to the finishes on a façade – is an aspect of architecture that the AJ has long championed.

Introduction

In 2019, the 2nd edition of Building 4Humanity Design Competition (B4H-DC) aims to address the notion of having architecture as a social and cultural facility, by seeking design ideas that would contribute towards the social inclusion and integration of Syrian war refugees in the Turkish border city of Reyhanlı. The competition has two separate categories: it welcomes submissions from students and recent graduates, as well as experienced professionals.

In September 2018, affected by the strong typhoon “Mangkhut”, the infrastructure in Xichong District was damaged to varying degrees, and it was one of the most affected areas in the city. We sincerely solicit forward-looking and innovative urban design concepts and schemes amongst domestic and international design institutions.

While the first issue of VAD (veredes, architecture and dissemination) focused on "the beginnings"—those origins and principles that provide, tangibly or symbolically, what seeks to exist—we now aim to broadly explore the parameters belonging to these origins. The Architecture Drawing Prize is an international competition that celebrates the art and skill of architectural drawing. Now in its third year, the prize is curated by Make Architects, Sir John Soane’s Museum and the World Architecture Festival.

Responsive Cities is a bi-annual international symposium on the future of cities organized by the Advanced Architecture Group of IAAC. The 2019 edition focuses on “Disrupting through Circular Design” within the framework of the Creative Food Cycles (CFC) project, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union and developed by the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, the Leibniz University of Hannover and the University of Genoa.

Panteon is an anachronistic venture: anachronistic is the content, anachronistic is the product, anachronistic is its use.

The protagonist is the architecture of the city of Rome, all built between 1911 and 1989 within the GRA, our contemporary city wall, whose analogies are arbitrary and questionable.

Panteon aims to be a platform for architectural debate using the city of Rome as a pretext, as an infinite warehouse from which to draw answers to a potentially infinite number of questions.
