World Architecture Festival Awards 2016 Announces Day 2 Winners

The second group of winners of the World Architecture Festival’s (WAF) 2016 category awards have been announced today on day 2 of the event, held this year in Berlin, Germany.

The 16 Day 2 winners will now go on to compete against the 14 Day 1 winners for the title of 2016 World Building of the Year. The projects will be presented in front of a Super Jury, which includes Kai-Uwe Bergmann (BIG), Louisa Hutton (Sauerbruch Hutton), David Chipperfield, Ole Scheeren, and ArchDaily's co-founder and Editor-in-Chief David Basulto.

Winners of Day 1 World Architecture Festival Awards 2016 Announced

Fourteen projects have been announced as category winners of the The World Architecture Festival’s (WAF) 2016 awards on Day 1 of the festival. Winners in 32 categories will be named over the first two days of the conference, and will then go on to compete for the title of the World Building of the Year 2016, to be announced on Friday.

The world’s largest architectural awards program, the 2016 WAF Awards consisted of 343 projects from 58 countries around the world. Finalists projects will be invited to present their project live at the festival to a "super jury" that includes Kai-Uwe Bergmann (BIG), Louisa Hutton (Sauerbruch Hutton), David Chipperfield, Ole Scheeren, and ArchDaily's co-founder and Editor-in-Chief David Basulto, who will determine the grand prize winner.

OMA, Aires Mateus + Staab Architekten Unveil Honorable Mention Proposals for New Neue Galerie Competition

Two weeks ago, Herzog & de Meuron was announced as the winners of the international competition to design the new Museum of the 20th Century to be located adjacent to Mies van der Rohe’s seminal Neue Galerie in the heart of the Berlin Cultural Forum in Berlin, Germany.

We’ve now received additional proposals for the competition, including honorable mention-awarded entries from OMA, Staab Architekten, and Aires Mateus e Associados, and a finalist proposal from REX, that show alternative strategies for the site.

A fascinating exhibition about the current state of building culture with focus on timber – the natural renewable resource

Based on selected distinguished national and international projects, the exhibition represents the state of the art in sustainable and modern timber architecture. The presentation spans from spectacular projects by Toyo Ito, Shigeru Ban and Frei Otto to direction setting urban timber houses such as those by Kaden & Klingbeil in Berlin/Prenzlauer Berg, and upwards to the newest trends in high­rise buildings realized in timber.

UNStudio's Ben van Berkel Among 3 New Speakers Revealed for WAF 2016

Three new sessions have been announced for the 2016 World Architecture Festival (WAF), held from November 16-18 in Berlin, Germany. Adding to the impressive list of speakers at the event will be Ben van Berkel, founder of UNStudio, who will lecture on “Superliving - from exclusive to inclusive”; Carlos Zedillo of Infonavit discussing “Architect as instigator”; and Qutub Mandviwala, MQA, who will present on “Housing and cultural difference.”

Said Ben van Berkel about the event: “It is essential to understand that ‘housing for everyone’ is not simply a matter of providing homes for all, it is also a question of what the home of the future should be; how we can meet the demands of all future residents and provide housing that fulfils their varied and changing needs.”

OMA Releases New Renderings of their Axel Springer Building in Berlin

OMA has released new images of their design for Axel Springer’s business and digital division, in Berlin, Germany. One of the largest digital publishing houses in Europe, Axel Springer officially launched the project to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the company’s publishing building.

OMA’s proposal was selected in a 2014 international design competition, beating out finalist entries from BIG and Büro Ole Scheeren. The brief called for a new modern work environment to house Axel Springer’s growing business and digital divisions.

A Groundbreaking Ceremony in Berlin for HENN Architect's Zalando Headquarters

On Tuesday, September 6th, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the newly planned “Berliner Block,” the Zalando Headquarters — a structure designed by HENN Architects for Europe’s largest online dealer in footwear and fashion. Along with David Schneider of Zalando Management Board and Berlin’s governing mayor Michael Muller, architect Gunter Henn spoke about the construction project currently underway.

a+u 2016:08 "Berlin – Contexts of Architecture and Cityscape"

The August 2016 issue of a+u explores the architecture and cityscape of Berlin. The fascination of this city stems from the way it continually changes to reflect the current age, even while preserving the memory of past glories and tragedies and the complexities of its positive and negative legacies. This issue, with new photos, is devoted to the “now” of the city and its architecture in their contemporary and historical contexts.

Copenhagen Named the World's Most Livable City in Metropolis Magazine's 2016 Rankings

Metropolis Magazine has released their 2016 rankings of the world's most "livable" cities. Acknowledging that what makes a city "livable" can often be subjective, the team at Metropolis emphasizes that in creating the list they "focused on the concerns at Metropolis’ core—housing, transportation, sustainability, and culture." The result of this research was last year's top prize-winner Toronto dropping to the number 9 spot and Copenhagen, which last year took the number 4 spot, jumping to the top. Rounding out the top three are Berlin and Helsinki.

GRAFT Designs WAVE, a Green Oasis Along the Berlin Waterfront

GRAFT has designed a new residential complex, called WAVE, on a former harbor along the Spree River in Berlin, Germany. Drawing inspiration from the waterfront site, the two L-shaped buildings are situated parallel to the river and facing one another, creating an inner courtyard and providing units with views of the river and “The Molecule Men,” the iconic sculpture by artist Jonathan Borofsky.
