Venturi… and Us: III Mini-Congress on Theory, History, and Criticism of Architecture

In light of the anniversary of Robert Venturi's passing, the 3rd Mini-Congress on Architectural Theory, History, and Criticism, to be held at ETSAM on October 30, 2019, will explore the legacy of the author of Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture by reviewing the current relevance of his ideas in relation to four major themes: history, pop culture, icons and monuments, and design strategies.

Room For Expression: architecture, acoustics, and design

On June 4th and 5th, Knauf’s exclusive international event, 'Room For Expression'—which has already been successfully held in other parts of Europe—arrives in Spain to discuss acoustic comfort. Main Squares, Gathering Spaces

The cultural association “Barajas BIC,” with the support of the Barajas Municipal Board, is organizing a lecture series featuring municipal technical teams from various city councils in the Madrid region. “Main Squares, Meeting Places”—with presentations focused on urban regeneration and the revitalization of historic Madrid spaces from the 16th to 18th centuries—will take place on Thursdays throughout March and April (6:00 PM) at the “Gloria Fuertes” Cultural Center (179 Logroño Ave.).

Open House is an architecture and city festival that takes place one weekend a year in more than 40 cities around the world. For two days, the doors of dozens of public buildings, workspaces, residences, and artist and architect studios that are not usually accessible to the public are opened. It is a free event for the public that promotes knowledge of the city and recognition of the value of urban space. In Madrid, it is a project by the non-profit association Culture Care.

Architecture, like any discipline, develops its theory through words; yet, it is equally capable of thinking in images. When Renaissance humanists began to set forth their knowledge of the art of building in treatises, they tended to combine words and illustrations. In fact, some of the most celebrated treatises resemble visual atlases more than written volumes. But how can an image develop a theory? The theoretical fertility of the image emerges, almost by surprise, if we replace the modern conception of "theory" with the genuine meaning of the Greek term theoria: the act of "contemplation" and "speculation," of developing a "vision."
