The Paris Agreement is an international treaty on climate change. Adopted by 196 countries in Paris on December 12, 2015, it entered into force on November 4, 2016. Its goal is to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius—preferably 1.5 degrees—compared to pre-industrial levels. To achieve this long-term temperature goal, countries aim to peak greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible to achieve a climate-neutral planet by mid-century. This entails reducing domestic greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40% by 2030 relative to 1990 levels.
After two years of using the Zoom format, we are pleased to return to the in-person sessions of the National Academy of Architecture, Monterrey Chapter, at the Museo de Historia Mexicana, which we have traditionally held on the first Monday of every month since 1995. Launch event for the first published book by architect and artist Natália Barros: "Ensaios do corpo no lugar de morar" [Essays on the body in the place of dwelling], which investigates dwelling in confinement and the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on the relationship between the body and architecture. The book is an extension of the final undergraduate project (TCC) presented by the author at the School of Architecture of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) in 2020. The project was selected by ArchDaily as one of the best of 2020 and received an Artistic-Cultural Research award under the Aldir Blanc Law. Throughout the pages, the reader explores the discussion on the effects of the global pandemic experience on how spaces are conceived and built, as well as the contribution of art as an alternative and creative outlet. Grounded in a phenomenological approach and drawing from dance, scenography, visual arts, and technology, the book proposes new ways of thinking about and practicing architecture.
