The National Railway Museum and Malcolm Reading Consultants revealed the final concepts for the new Central Hall, created by five small to medium-sized international and UK practices. Shortlisted in November 2019, the 5 teams include a collaboration between 6a architects from UK and OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen from Belgium, Atelier d’Architecture Philippe Prost from France, Carmody Groarke from the UK, Feilden Fowles from the UK, and Heneghan Peng Architects from Ireland.

Best Office Awards has been held since 2010 and it is the main Russian professional award in the field of corporate interiors design. Russian and foreign office projects are denoted with this award and the prize is given to the office architect and customer tandem.

Rio de Janeiro is inviting everyone to be part of the 2020 official calendar, as the city serves as the first UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture and host of the 27th World Congress of Architects. The City Hall has published a public call (number 02/2019) in the Official Municipal Gazette, opening the floor for institutions and cultural producers from Brazil and abroad to submit proposals for events related to architecture, cultural heritage, landscaping, urban management, or discussions on the cities of the future.

MVRDV has won a competition to create a master plan for a new cultural and creative quarter in the heart of Potsdam, Germany. The project designed for developer Glockenweiß was acclaimed for its particular approach in creating considerably more space than required in the initial brief.

MILLIØNS, headed by SCI-Arc Faculty Zeina Koreitem and John May, was announced as the winner of the Everson Museum of Art competition. The L.A. team’s proposal was selected from submissions by four semifinalists including FreelandBuck, NATURALBUILD, and Normal Kelley.

In all its multiple meanings the word heritage refers to what we inherit from the past, both in material and immaterial sense.

Some authors speak about heritage as a sense of past, meant as a form of past self-awareness, as a collective experience and as an essential dimension of a culture. Some other authors believe that the idea of heritage deals with the ability to put the contemporary human signs into a historical perspective, so developing a sense of place, that is the place’s value and meaning.
Therefore, heritage can be intended as a sense of past and sense of place together.
The heritage’s existence itself lies in the ability to read/interpret the sense of belonging of something inherited from the past to a specific place, as well as in the shared need to preserve and deliver it to future generations.

The competition is open to any and all architects actively registered in the United States. The contest is also open to Associate members of the AIA, and student members of AIAS in good standing. Professional Affiliate or Allied members are not eligible. Entries submitted by ineligible individuals will not be processed; images will not be returned and no refund of the entry fee will be made.

This international competition challenges undergraduate students of schools of architecture, landscape, urban planning and design to propose alternative and innovative design schemes to revitalise four public open spaces in the Central district of Hong Kong. In cities today, public space development projects require a flexible approach; no single strategy can address the specific needs of every community or the unique conditions of each public space. What’s the role of public spaces in the contemporary city? How to create an inclusive and vibrant space where the community can be fully represented? How can urban design encourage social interactions between different users? How to upgrade existing public spaces by using an integrated and comprehensive people-centred approach? These are some of the critical questions that the participating students have to address in this competition

Organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) and curated by Mariana Pestana, the 5th Istanbul Design Biennial will take place on 26 September – 8 November 2020. DETAIL is awarding the international DETAIL Prize 2020, and in doing so once again recognising the importance of innovative details for the overall design concept.

The Fundamental Design Build Initiative invites 10 early-career architects, designers, and engineers from around the world to San Jose, Costa Rica for a three-month summer residency. Over the duration of the program, participants will be exposed to all aspects of a built work of design including: site analysis, brainstorming, fundraising, project management, sourcing materials, pre-fabrication, onsite construction, public relations, and preparing publicity materials. Participants will be chosen through a competitive selection process and are invited to attend and participate at no cost to themselves beyond travel and per diem expenses. Accommodations are provided in the cultural center of downtown San Jose, Costa Rica.

We are pleased to announce the launch of an annual international design competition: Low-cost House Design Competition. The competition is designed to challenge and seek creativity with ideas and concepts in architectural design, as well as landscape design or site planning. This competition aims to promote alternative solutions to housing, coming up with affordable and sustainable units with limited size and budget to the urgent demands for a house of urban poor.

In response to China’s State Council’s notice on extending the Lunar New Year holiday to February 2 and Guangdong Province’s notice on returning to work after February 9, we decide to adjust the Timetable of International Architecture Design Competition of Shenzhen Opera House accordingly. The deadline for submitting the Application Documents (including registration documents and early concept proposal in the form of hardcopy and softcopy (U disk)) in open call phase has been adjusted from before 15:00 on February 18, 2020 to before 15:00 on March 10, 2020. Laka released the results of its competition that gathered over 200 entries. Aiming to diversify the outcomes, the theme focuses on architectural, urban, technological, or product design “capable of dynamic interaction with its social, natural, or built surroundings”. In fact, the subject revolves around interdisciplinary “solutions developed through a process of changes and adjustments”.

An international panel of judges went through the projects of 350 participants from 40 countries, and selected the proposals that “took advantages from disciplines such as robotics, mechanics, digital fabrication, biodesign and biofabrication, computational design, materials science, bioarchitecture, social sciences, industrial design, mobility, and more”. It is said—perhaps closer to myth than reality—that when Mies van der Rohe interviewed a candidate to join his studio, he would subject them to a peculiar test. He would lead them to a drafting table, provide them with the necessary instruments—rulers, compasses, squares, triangles, pencils, erasers, and so on—and ask them to arrange these elements within the confined field of the drawing board.

YAC - Young Architects Competitions and Urban Up l Unipol launch “Hill of the Arts”, a competition of ideas aiming to transform an almost-neglected villa near Turin into a unique and luxury art hotel. A cash prize of € 20,000 will be awarded to the winners selected by an outstanding jury panel made of, among the others, Patrik Schumacher (Zaha Hadid Architects), Daniel Libeskind, Emmanuelle Moureaux, Edoardo Tresoldi, Lukas Barry (Carmody Groarke architects), Paolo Danelli (DAP studio).

The recent distinction awarded by Roskilde University to Rodrigo Tisi, academic and director of the Master of Design Sciences at the Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez (UAI) School of Design, as "Adjunct Associate Professor" in the Faculty of Arts and Communication, reflects the excellence of his work in the field of Performance Design. More importantly, it highlights the Design Lab's capacity to explore new content and areas of knowledge. A National Fondart grant in the architecture research category will allow the academic to collaborate with researchers from Denmark, Norway, and Canada.
