The University of Chicago Lab School's new arts facility, the Gordon Parks Art Hall, includes art and music labs, rehearsal rooms, an art gallery, performance spaces, and a music hall.

Funded in part by a donation from the George Lucas Family Foundation, the high-profile project features large windows that required an optimal daylighting solution.

After some back-and-forth exchange of ideas and on-site meetings, a final design was agreed upon: a custom motorized shade system on tracks. The shades would be operated via a wall switch, and feature Mermet E Screen Charcoal/Gray with a 3% openness factor.

The custom solution was based on Draper’s Motorized FlexShade ®.

The 120V AC 485 Motorized FlexShade® provides the scalability to synchronize automation between just a few window shades or entire floors within large commercial buildings.


The 120V AC RTS Motorized FlexShade® window shade offers a 3-wire motor that features parallel wiring, electronic programmable limits, and a multitude of control options. With a hand-held remote control and Plug & Play options, this easily programmable shade is the ideal choice for the office, boardroom, small commercial settings, residential, and church applications.


A low-voltage motorized solution, the 24V DC FlexShade® window shade reduces wiring costs and fits small spaces. This motorized shade is available in 24V RTS, 24V dry contact, and 24V 485 platform technologies. The 24V RTS motor features wireless RTS control and is easily programmable. For large commercial buildings, the 24V 485 motor provides the scalability to fit the needs and budget of a project. The 24V dry contact provides a simple relay control for low-voltage shades making it ideal for home theaters.


A rechargeable, motorized window shade, the FlexShade® Recharge features quiet operation and ease of installation in difficult areas with no wiring or electrician needed.


The FlexShade® 2 window shade provides the ability to reduce the light gap in institutional or commercial areas that contain a large span of windows. As a taller shade, it maximizes the ability to reduce the light gap by minimizing the number of window shades required for coverage.
