Despite being separated by only a few miles, Manhattan and Jersey City seem much further apart; the Hudson River forces commuters to take long, roundabout routes or rely on the over-worked PATH system. Inspired by a need for connectivity between the two cities, Kevin Shane began conceptualizing a new pedestrian bridge, dubbed Liberty Bridge, which would connect Jersey City to Battery Park. After consulting with city officials, he was put into contact with architect Jeff Jordan, who produced a series of renderings depicting the idea. Liberty Bridge is envisioned not only as walking and bike lanes, but as a site for retail, artwork and leisure, offering views of the Hudson River. At the moment, the idea is just that – an idea; however the project is gaining attention in New York and New Jersey, and an online petition to support its enactment is gaining support.
The bridge itself would be built on the Pennsylvania Railway Embankment, an abandoned ruin in downtown Jersey City. A series of paths, woven through a box truss frame, with variations between concrete and wood construction to denote use would comprise the main body of the bridge. Lower, weather protected paths would facilitate commuting while the upper, exposed levels would provide a scenic view for leisure and retail. Altogether, a total length of 5,000 feet to accommodate the distance, as well as a height of 200 feet for passing ships is necessary – a monumental undertaking.
