Building In Lagoa das Furnas / Aires Mateus The project intends to evoke the architectural landscape of the Azores, drawing upon the form and material that embed the collective memory of this island and archipelago, that have become, with time, a second nature of this place. Santa Ana’s Chapel / e|348 arquitectura Visiting the site, we noticed that the given location of the Chapel was in the intersection of five streets/roads, and at the bottom corner of an ascending topography. We noticed also that this topographic condition was the perfect “stage” for celebrating Santa Ana’s festivities, occurring in July 26th every year, as locals already do (read more…)

House in Melides / Pedro Reis The house in Melides, on the southern Alentejo Coast, by Pedro Reis, represents the desire for a holiday house as a getaway from the bustle of a big city. The client made the unusual decision to have an architectural competition between three distinct ateliers, allowing a choice from a wider range of possible solutions (read more…)

Morerava Cabins / AATA Associate Architects We originally started with the idea of the Morerava Cabins when we saw an opportunity to create a tourist complex on Easter Island in 2009. Analysing the tourist market on the Island we quickly realized most sectors were well developed, spanning from luxury Hotels to private homes and camping, however one niche sector was not covered: family friendly cabins which meet certain quality standards (read more…)

Torreaguera Atresados / XPIRAL The two ‘atretic’ houses proposed, revolved around the idea of a redistribution of the plots along a row. The construction had to abide by the conditions of the maximum height permitted for buildings in the area and having to adapt to the topology of the existing plots (read more…)

Fogo Island Long Studio / Saunders Architecture Fogo Island lies outside of Newfoundland, Canada and is home to a gentle, independent people who have lived for centuries between wind and waves in pursuit of fish. Fogo Islanders live in the untamed landscape of the North Atlantic. The people are subtle and unpretentious yet have seen their traditional way of life by threatened by forces largely beyond their control (read more…)

Dwelling In Avila / A-cero A dwelling of generous proportions developed over a single storey to facilitate the indoor-outdoor connection and to make the most of the environment in which it stands. Surrounded by meadows, tree groves, chestnut, pine and oak trees and wildlife represented by stags, wild boar and roe deer, the edifice establishes a recognised link with the traditional architecture and vernacular customs (read more…)

Balancing Barn / MVRDV Balancing Barn is situated on a beautiful site by a small lake in the English countryside near Thorington in Suffolk. The Barn responds through its architecture and engineering to the site condition and natural setting. The traditional barn shape and reflective metal sheeting take their references from the local building vernacular. In this sense the Balancing Barn aims to live up to its educational goal in re-evaluating the countryside and making modern architecture accessible (read more…)

Schouwburg Amphion / Mecanoo Amphion Theatre, designed by Mecanoo, takes the place of the former and successful Amphion Theatre of the seventies which needed replacing. With its slightly reclined facades, the theatre is anchored firmly to the Doetinchem ground. The sand-coloured masonry is interrupted by a playful pattern of square windows which appear to be strewn on the facades (read more…)

It accommodates all the communal functions – reception, catering and showers/toilets – as well as the services essential to the campsite’s operations. Ecole Professionnelle Viège / Bonnard Woeffray Architectes The new class building of the Viège/Visp College of Further Education achieves a transformation in terms of context and enables the linking of the neighbourhood’s schools, the creation of a training campus, and the integration of the future workshops and gyms. Admirant e 18 September Plein / Massimiliano & Doriana Fuksas

Following the definition of the Masterplan in 1998 for the center of Eindhoven in Holland, studio Fuksas developed the four projects associated with it: the 18-Septemberplein, a square of 7.000 m² with an underground parking lot of 2.300m² for 1.700 bicycles, the Piazza Shopping Mall, a shopping center covering approximately 20.000m² with 6.000m² of office space, the Media Market, a store for sales of electrical appliances and electronic equipment and the Admirant Entrance Building (read more…)

Argos, Building for an Electrical Generator at a Cement Factory / Felipe Gonzalez-Pacheco In July 2006, the project is the winner of an architectural contest, for the resolution of a “skin” for a technical building containing an self generation electrical plant for cement factory. The Factory wanted to generate also a corporative image with the building. Their purpose became a mutual opportunity to generate an experimentation laboratory of technical possibilities with the material they produce, with very low density concretes (read more…)

In Progress: Shenzhen Stock Exchange by OMA tops out We first heard about the new Shenzhen Stock Exchange (SSE) building by OMA during the peak of the new chinese construction revolution. Then we saw Rem Koolhaas breaking ground together with the Chinese government, and capitalism in China started to have a tangible representation. The new building for the NASDAQ equivalent (730 high tech companies & startups, moving over US$500 billion) has now topped out at 246m (read more…)
