La Fondazione's Youth Board is proud to announce its inaugural Youth Board Benefit, an event that will raise awareness for La Fondazione NY’s mission as well as honor the work of emerging Italian artist Davide Balliano.

Objective

The Architect’ 16: “ASA Back to Basic” expo aims to introduce identity and excellence in design for Thai architects, and will feature achievements in architecture, innovation and technology. In addition, the expo will have international seminars and services for members and the general public, including displays of materials and products related to architecture, interior design and construction.

For a decade, Los Angeles architects, designers, builders, and engineers have joined forces to create innovative structures meant for feeding, not housing. They will again design large-scale structures made entirely of canned foods for the 10th Annual CanstructionLA design/build competition to benefit the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. CanstructionLA has donated more than 300,000 cans of food to help feed people since 2006.

Henk Ovink has transformed the way communities affected by continuing threats of flooding respond to change and how architects and city planners rebuilt their cities after flooding disasters. Both Henk Ovink and OMA are involved in the post-Hurricane Sandy rebuild in the United States through the ‘Rebuild by Design’ competition. In this event Reinier de Graaf (Partner at OMA) and Henk Ovink (Special Envoy for International Water Affairs for the Kingdom of the Netherlands) discuss with Ricky Burdett the challenges and approaches of rebuilding critical infrastructure in areas prone to flooding and their engagement with communities.

Kunlé Adeyemi’s recent work, the 'Makoko Floating School', is an innovative, prototype floating structure located on the lagoon heart of Nigeria’s largest city, Lagos. This acclaimed project is part of an extensive research project - 'African Water Cities' - being developed by NLÉ, an architecture, design, and urbanism practice founded by Adeyemi in 2010 with a focus on developing cities and communities.

60 million people the world over have fled their homes. The dimensions of the refugee movement are becoming a major challenge for big cities in particular, where these displaced persons must be accommodated and provided for, given work and integrated into society in large numbers and in a short time. For this reason, it is necessary to quickly create adequate living space and interfaces between this living space and the urban realm in order to facilitate participation in urban life from the outset.

Since infrastructure is the embodiment of long-term investments, its impact in determining the organization of flows extends well into the future, both for developed and developing countries. Whereas the former are confronted with the need to maintain and renew highways, electrical grids, sewage systems, and the like, the latter are scrambling to meet the needs of their own expanding populations. In both cases, massive investments for retrofitting or for new infrastructure are key to sustaining the human habitat. This topic: “Infrastructure Space” will be the focus of the 5th International Forum for Sustainable Construction in Detroit, USA from April 7 to April 9, 2016.

Scuola Politecnica di Design (SPD), the first postgraduate school for design disciplines in Italy, invites students young professionals to compete for the first edition of 'Design Master Scholarships 2016'. SPD offers 5 (five) international scholarships for its master's course 2016-2017 school year.

We know people overwhelmingly want to stay living in their homes and communities for as long as possible. But, livability isn’t about ageing. It is about comfort, convenience, safety and options throughout one’s life. Yet, people tend to buy or live in homes based on their present-day circumstances. We can start to change that… one home design at a time.

With the growth of new development and renovation in our two boroughs in the past five years, our professional associations are excited to collaborate on this event to celebrate the contributions of the design professions to the urban environment we all share.

In its inaugural year, the Brooklyn + Queens Design Awards (BQDA) program has been established to encourage excellence in architectural design, to raise public awareness of the built environment and to honor the architects, owners and builders of significant projects within the two boroughs. It is the goal and collaboration of the AIA Brooklyn and AIA Queens Chapters to promote chapter members and affiliates through the display of their design and service accomplishments.

Peter Marlow’s photographs depicting all 42 of the cathedrals of the Church of England are to be exhibited inside The Chapel of Christ the Servant at Coventry Cathedral. This is the first time that the work has been displayed in one of the spaces featured in the series, and the first time the project has been exhibited outside of London. The display is a continuation of Coventry Cathedral’s tradition of, and commitment to, exhibiting work by contemporary British artists.

Alejandro Aravena's proposal for the Architecture Biennale 2016, "Reporting from the front”, invites each country to share experiences and moments of crisis that architecture has experienced in recent years. The proposal calls for a reflection on the mistakes in order to share solutions that may allow other countries to anticipate and avoid similar situations.

Activating the City with a Qpuncture!

I. Background
Opposite to the conventional concept and operation mode of urban planning, which is from macro to micro and from top to bottom, Q (the initial of pinyin “qu”, simplified Chinese: 趣, n. fun; adj. interesting) City Plan operates with a human-oriented spirit. The plan approaches the large-scale city by rediscovering its nooks and crannies, amending the sweeping generalizations and supplementing the grand narrative of traditional urban planning.
Q City Plan was initiated in Yantian District, Shenzhen in 2013 in the form of art installation, structure and landscape design. The Q City Plan features multiple and flexible formats, freedom to choose sites and projects, minimum cost and constructability while encouraging designers to take greater initiative in design, material selection, construction and cost management. The first edition of the Q City Plan received more than 60 proposals, 12 of which are now under construction in Yantian while drawing much attention in the contemporary press.
The Q City Plan International Design Competition is co-organized by the Shenzhen Urban Planning and Land Resources Committee, Shenzhen Yantian Government and China Building Centre (CBC). It invites all the design firms and designers in architecture, landscape, urban planning, design and art. We expect schemes that are both enlightening and feasible for the urban renewal for Yantian.

The SAH Los Angeles Seminar bridges the Society's efforts in historic conservation to the contemporary built environment and the local public and professional community. The LA Seminar will critically look at SurveyLA, a five-million dollar, city-wide study of historic resources sponsored by the J. Paul Getty Trust and the City of Los Angeles. As described online, “SurveyLA – the Los Angeles Historic Resources Survey – is Los Angeles' first-ever comprehensive program to identify significant historic resources throughout our city. The survey marks a coming-of-age for Los Angeles' historic preservation movement, and will serve as a centerpiece for the City's first truly comprehensive preservation program."

The countryside carries so much emotional weight and nostalgia through thousands of years of time. Currently, more than 100 villages disappear every day in China. On the other hand, the rise of city living standards and GDP require a more suitable tourist experience in the surviving villages. How can we combine the inheritance and preservation of villages with a countryside tourism business model? To provide a better ecosystem for lodge and inn, farm, organic agriculture and handmade crafts is the challenge that we are facing now!

Makers are the group of people who are leading us towards a future lifestyle. They make the impossible possible. Makers are affecting every field of our life, from the internet, design, products, finance, interaction, community, biology, science and all other aspects to provide us a better living quality and a whole new experience. Thus, once the countryside meets the makers, tradition meets innovation; nostalgia meets the crowd fund. What kind of spark will that make?

In conjunction with the exhibition Global Citizen: The Architecture of Moshe Safdie on display at BSA Space, this portrait film celebrates the life and work of world-renowned Israeli-Canadian architect Moshe Safdie FAIA by highlighting his outstanding contribution to the field of architecture. From the Holocaust Museum, Yad Vashem, in Jerusalem to the masterplan for the city of Modi’in to the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, this personal documentary delves into some of Safdie’s most famous design projects and explores what makes each one unique.

This international one-stage architecture competition invites all architecture students, young architects and young professionals with a degree in architecture studies (≤ 40 years old) to develop and submit compelling ideas for the design of a Site Gallery located near the River Tower (Torre do Rio) in the bank of the Guadiana River and adjacent to the fortified walls of the village of Mértola, Portugal.
