Multiple-airport cities present new challenges for passengers and urban dwellers who often struggle to navigate their aerial infrastructure. The fragmentation of airports in a single city, frequently owned and operated by different governing bodies, can lead to unpredictable and even confusing experiences. With seven airports in its metro area, New York City offers a perfect case study to reimagine airports as a choreographed urban ecosystem, which relies as much on architecture and urban planning as it does on technology and data-driven design. A panel of experts will discuss challenges and opportunities for the future of New York City’s aerial infrastructure, drawing from the think tank’s focus on urban design and digital interfaces.

One thing is key when it comes to wood-based materials: Authenticity. In addition to how it looks, the feel of a surface is also important. The right texture gives a decor character and depth, as well as a natural appeal, brings it even closer to the real thing.

[TRANS-] media is looking to the architecture and related fields for research and creative work that addresses the concept of media. Print media, radio, film, television, and the internet have conditioned our perception of physical and social space. Media specific to architecture has also influenced the convergence of material, space, and content, charting new directions in culture, society, and architectural discourse. In the fourth issue of [TRANS-] journal, we seek to understand the effects of media on the creation and interpretation of design and creative work by asking how media produces knowledge and theoretical discourse about architecture design and the related fields. Through [TRANS-] media we aim to explore the transposition of materials and messages in physical and social space. This exchange of material and immaterial factors extends to the way we communicate our ideas, verbally and visually, the physical matter we choose to do this through, and the ultimate way they are perceived. In short, media is the connection between idea and reality, creator and audience, past and present.

The MAS in Collective Housing is celebrating its 10th anniversary and they want to share their happiness for that achievement. After having 256 alumni from 38 different countries, and 70 international workshops, we are convinced that they are doing something right. Privileging declarations, right answers, proofs, and universals, culture is often banging away with the same blunt tools that are completely inadequate to address contemporary chemistries of power. On the flip side of these logics, Medium Design offers no dramatic manifestos where things are new or right. Instead it only rehearses a habit of mind that has been eclipsed. From June 4–15, 2018, the Department of Design Research, Writing and Criticism at the School of Visual Arts will host its annual two-week intensive dedicated to researching and writing about design. Third-largest national park in one of Europe’s greenest country, Kemeri is a stunning and eclectic mix of forests, lakes, swamps and ancient raised bogs. Situated just a 1-hour train ride from Latvia’s capital, Riga, the park is home to a wide range of fauna including rare birds like the black stork, as well as moose, deer, elk, foxes, wolves, and wild cattle and horses. These were all reintroduced into this unique ecosystem with some help from the World Wildlife Fund.
