The aim of this competition is to make it possible to identify and implement an integrated urban remodelling concept that meets the complex needs of an area of significant size for the efficient functioning of the city of Cluj-Napoca.

BI Group Architects Awards – is the first international competition for young professionals and graduates of architectural universities in Kazakhstan. The organizer is a large construction holding BI Group — the leader in the real estate market in Kazakhstan. The holding company has been working since 1995 and during this time has earned the reputation of a professional and reliable partner. The purpose of this competition is to develop a concept to draw and identify the most modern and progressive architectural and engineering solutions, as well as innovative technologies to solve acute social problems on the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan, caused by a shortage of cultural facilities, educational and health facilities.

Drawn from keen observation of the rapidly changing social economic landscape of China, and using OPEN Architecture’s projects as case studies, Towards Openness is a symphony of seven new and upcoming projects and six idea chapters that are interwoven to offer an in-depth examination of this unique practice and the critical thinking underlying its work.

Belgian architect Aude-Line Dulière has been selected as the winner of Harvard University Graduate School of Design’s 2018 Wheelwright Prize. The $100,000 award supports travel-based research and investigative techniques to further explore contemporary design. Dulière’s winning proposal Crafted Images: Material Flows, Techniques, and Uses in Set Design Construction, aims to “examine construction methods and supply systems in the global film industry, engaging the space-making elements of film and set design as well as potential innovations around material use and reuse throughout architecture and construction generally.”

After being on display at the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine in Paris in 2016, the exhibition "The Universalists – 50 Years of Portuguese Architecture" will be presented for the first time in Portugal at the Nave Expositiva of the Casa da Arquitectura in Matosinhos, from April 13 to August 19.

The opening will take place on the 13th at 9:00 PM, featuring a guided tour by the exhibition curator, architect Nuno Grande. This will be followed at 10:00 PM by the debate "Portugal, an 'Other' Universalism," featuring testimony from Eduardo Lourenço and the participation of Alexandre Alves Costa, João Belo Rodeia, and Nuno Grande (moderator).

This issue of dearq seeks to shed light on a spectrum of spatial, material, and research practices intertwining architecture, design, and computation. We welcome contributions that address these from critical, de-colonial, and local perspectives, with a non-exclusive focus on Latin America and the rest of the “Global South”.
