In October 2016, the School of Architecture at Universidad San Sebastián launched the first in a series of inter-school workshops aimed at fostering critical discussion in architecture, using the project as a vector. This inaugural experience, led by the prominent Spanish architect and academic Juan Herreros, is captured in this publication. It documents the productive week of work shared by the participants—ten national architecture schools and one international school—alongside Herreros, as they designed various proposals seeking a critical and contemporary approach to the issue of residential infrastructure in the La Vega sector of Santiago, Chile.

In 1960, Jane Jacobs' book The Death and Life of Great American Cities was a landmark for architecture, investigating the consequences of urban reconfiguration by modern urban planners and architects. Jacobs was also an activist involved in many mid-century movements in New York to halt the draconian plans of Robert Moses, a powerful builder with significant political influence.
