“Global Architectural Political Events” are a series of public debates organised by Alejandro Zaera-Polo & Guillermo Fernandez-Abascal that continue the investigation about the political re-engagement of the discipline, as analysed in the essay “Well into the 21st Century” and the “Global Architectural Compass”.
Aerial Futures: Leading Edge is lively, provocative and interdisciplinary symposium examining the architecture, technologies and cultures of the contemporary airport. Curated by PLANE—SITE and free to attend, this two-day event understands the airport as a choreographed topography of hypermobility, information and cultures, defining how we travel, trade and connect with each other. It marks the threshold between land and sky, as well as sovereign territories. The airport — what the philosopher Giorgio Agamben describes as a ‘zone of exception’ where the ordinary rules no longer apply — is where the definitive issues of the 21st century play out.
The University of Virginia’s School of Architecture Dean Ila Berman recently announced her intention to launch the NEXT CITIES INSTITUTE, an interdisciplinary design and research platform focused on the rapidly changing dynamics of global urban futures. With an aim to forecast and shape the vital urbanism of this century, the NEXT CITIES INSTITUTE will be a university-wide initiative, led by the School of Architecture and coalescing expertise throughout the University of Virginia, with partners in its Schools of Law, Leadership and Public Policy, Engineering, and Arts and Sciences. Dean Berman spoke about the NEXT CITIES INSTITUTE, its mission, and how it will transform the way students of architecture and its related fields will approach the design of future cities.
The Avery Review, a journal of critical essays on architecture published by the Office of Publications at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation, invites submissions for its first-ever Essay Prize. The call is open to current students and recent graduates, whether in schools of architecture or elsewhere (eligibility details below). In keeping with the mission of the journal, we hope to receive submissions that use the genres of the review and the critical essay to explore the urgent ideas and problems that animate the field of architecture. We’re looking for essays that test and expand the author’s own intellectual commitments—theoretical, architectural, and political—through the work of others.

115 countries and 22 international organizations took part in the exhibition.
3,500 events were organized during the exhibition, and around 4 million people have visited the venue.
An exhibition facility for such a major project was constructed on the Left (southern) Bank of the Ishim River in Astana on a total area of 174 hectares. EXPO site itself occupies 25 hectares, the remaining space (149 hectares) was developed for residential use and infrastructure facilities.

When there are so many powerful computer visualization and drafting programs available, why do architects still draw by hand? What intelligence does the body bring to paper? And what richness do pen and ink bring to a design?
Many of the physical spaces that architects, landscape architects, urbanists, and engineers design are inherently locales of joint access and participation. Such long-existing typologies of sharing include plazas, living rooms, libraries, waiting areas, museums, and cohousing schemes. The built environment serves as the platform within which myriad sociological, cultural, and technological forces share legal parameters and broader audiences. Today, digitally-based platforms, supported by vast physical infrastructures, facilitate new types of exchange. Such platforms bring about liberating possibilities to actualize transnational networks that coalesce around food, shelter, transportation, and talent. Yet, for every emancipatory path an equally restrictive one exists. Digitally-mediated sharing can serve as a mask for diffuse forms of financialization and extraction in spatial domains that traditionally conducted their day-to-day operations outside of the flows of global capital.

An old decrepit model little changed since 1958, Architectural Education sets students up to fail, teaching very few practical skills which can be implemented in the real world. Instead it wallows in a void, somewhere between artistic representation and narrative’.
