Competition: Can a Building Clean the Air?

Community Forests International (CFI) is excited to announce its second architectural design competition for the backwoods cabin of the future. The first, hosted in 2014, drew in over 50 entries from 11 different countries and served as a platform for exploring how humans can get back to nature in the 21st century. Bringing together visionary architects, artists, green builders and DIYers, this new challenge addresses the climate crisis and will help transform the organization’s 235 hectare (580 acre) organic farm and forest outside of Sussex, New Brunswick, Canada into a Rural Innovation Campus.

AIA Brooklyn and Queens Chapter Launch the Brooklyn & Queens Design Awards

With the growth of new development and renovation in our two boroughs in the past five years, our professional associations are excited to collaborate on this event to celebrate the contributions of the design professions to the urban environment we all share.

In its inaugural year, the Brooklyn + Queens Design Awards (BQDA) program has been established to encourage excellence in architectural design, to raise public awareness of the built environment and to honor the architects, owners and builders of significant projects within the two boroughs. It is the goal and collaboration of the AIA Brooklyn and AIA Queens Chapters to promote chapter members and affiliates through the display of their design and service accomplishments.

European Architecture Students Assembly 2016: "Not Yet Decided"

Five hundred of the most progressive architecture students and young, talented architects are heading to Lithuania this summer. For the first time in its history, the European Architecture Students Assembly (EASA) is being organized in the country. The small Lithuanian seaside town of Nida, located on the the Curonian Spit - the 98 km long thin, curved sand-dune spit that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea - will host the event.

February 28th is the deadline for the A’ Design Award & Competition, an international design accolade that reaches millions of design oriented readers, brands, designers, architects and developers from countries around the world. This is the design award that runs and manages the World Design Rankings, and last year there were winners from 83 countries in 88 design categories that were judged by a 70-person grand jury panel.

120 Hours 2016: 'Whatever Happened to Architectural Space?'

120 Hours, an open architectural competition organised by students from the Oslo School of Architecture, is inviting fellow students from around the world to explore the role of the architect in today's society. The competition, according to its organisers, is in "a unique position to make students reflect on their future profession. We want to challenge people to rethink the future of architecture." Last year's competition, chaired by Julien de Smedt, received 741 submissions from 90 different countries.

Active Public Space is seeking case studies regarding existing public spaces with particular interest in new “active” forms that emerge from the technological advances of the Information Age. The call is aimed at detecting and mapping existing successful examples of active-smart public space in terms of design, technology, management and occupancy by citizens.

Fela Memorial Force HQ: The Architecture of a Leftist Police Force

This architecture exhibition deconstructs the traditional Police Station in Nigeria from an autocratic building into a leftist social infrastructure that allows symbiotic relationship between People and Police. Triggered by political events, the building is named after human rights campaigner and musician, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and hosts protests, concerts, fora and fitness walks. Because of the social infrastructure that it is, Fela Memorial becomes a vehicle to transform the nodal Obalende, Lagos into a smart, accessible district.

Konstrukt: Design and Innovation Awards 2016

KONSTRUKT is a competitive assembly that endeavours to recognize and honour niche aesthetic design to simple functional innovation, from student to architect or civil engineer. It is their first ever chance in Eastern India to showcase their skills and get accolades from the stalwarts.

MadeinSpain_USA: Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos to Lecture at RICE in Houston

Next February 22nd at 5.30 pm, Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos will start MadeinSpain5_USA lecture series at RICE School of Architecture in Houston, where they will show the most significant features of Spanish architecture related to their own work. One day later, on Tuesday at 12PM, there will be a round table with Fuensanta Nieto and Enrique Sobejano, attended by the renowned architect and professor Carlos Jimenez and Martha Thorne - Executive Director of the Pritzker Architecture Prize - as representative of the Foundation for Contemporary Architecture.

Call for Entries: Museum of London West Smithfield International Design Competition

The Museum of London and Malcolm Reading Consultants have launched an international search for an outstanding architect or team of architects to create a new building for the museum at West Smithfield in the City of London. The project at the heart of the two-stage design competition has a £130-150m construction budget, and is focused on regenerating a nationally-significant landmark and creating new contemporary galleries within a group of historic buildings on the West Smithfield site. The Museum of London is one of the top ten museums and galleries in the UK capital and responsible for the world’s largest archaeological archive, which currently holds six million artefacts.

Alejandro Aravena’s statement “Reporting from the Front” for the 15th Biennale di Architettura di Venezia invites the national pavilions to share experiences about architecture that through intelligence, intuition, or both at the same time, are able to escape the status quo - presenting stories that, despite the world's difficulties, have proven successful.

The head of Urban Harmony-Egyptian Ministry of Culture has announced that "REFRAMING BACK//IMPERATIVE CONFRONTATIONS" has been selected to represent Egypt at the Biennale di Venezia 2016. The project team, led by Architect Ahmad Hilal and composed of Eslam Salem, Gabriele Secchi, Luca Borlenghi and Mostafa Salem, is trying to explore various stories of Architecture narrating the difficulties and challenges in the Egyptian built environment.

On Tuesday, February 16th, Storefront for Art and Architecture will open Closed Worlds, an exhibition curated by Lydia Kallipoliti that presents an archive of 41 living prototypes of closed resource regeneration systems built over the last century. The archive represents an unexplored genealogy of closed systems in architectural practice. The exhibition will also feature Some World Games, a virtual reality installation by Farzin Farzin that presents a contemporary 42nd prototype of a closed system inside the walls of Storefront’s gallery space at 97 Kenmare Street. A related public conference that further explores closed worlds will take place at The Cooper Union on Saturday, February 27th from 12-6 pm.

The proposal calls for a reflection on the mistakes in order to share solutions that may allow other countries to anticipate and avoid similar situations.
