Journal Squared / Handel Architects + HWKN

Jersey City’s Journal Square will soon reach new heights, as Hollwich Kushner (HWKN) and Handel Architects have broken ground on what will be the tallest building in New Jersey: Journal Squared. The transit-oriented urban renewal project will be completed in three phases; the first, which will add 540 residential units to the area, is planned for completion in mid-2016. Once the 2.3 million square foot project is complete, three metal panel clad towers will dominated the skyline, ultimately totaling in 1,840 units and reaching up to 70 stories.

In attempt to relate to the lower density neighborhood in which surrounds the site, the footprint of Journal Squared will “touch the ground lightly as its mass morphs into smaller units.” Programs, such as retail, restaurants and lobbies, will activate its base, while acres of land previously devoted to surface parking and station loading will be transformed into a “tree-filled plaza” that can host a range of community events. From farmer’s markets to bicycle parking and evening film projections, these events will take place along a pathway of low lying stairs, which will gently slope down to connect with the adjacent Journal Square PATH stop.
