We saw this project during its design and construction phase and now, thanks to photographer Nelson Garrido, we present you 1111 Lincoln Road by Herzog & de Meuron completed.

This mixed use project is currently being built at the corner of Alton and Lincoln, one of the most active pedestrian areas in the city, and it will include residences, retail spaces and parking. Parking takes a central space in this building, with one of the best views I have ever seen on a parking space.

Jacques Herzog stated that this builing will reinterpret the essence of Tropical Modernism, and it somehow reminds me of the modern movement in Brazil, with raw structures providing shade, while containing smaller enclosing sub-elements. The slabs stand over a set of irregular columns, giving a sense of a precarious equilibrium. These columns also cast different shadows, giving more character to the facade.

But there are more references to Brazil’s modernism: interior courtyards by landscape architect Raymond Jungles, follower of  Roberto Burle Marx (renowned figure of the modern movement in Brazil).

VitraHaus virtual tour

By — Filed under: Architectural Photography ,Institutional Architecture , , ,

Iwan Baan has always amazed us with his photos, capturing the essence of several projects around the world. But Iwan has also been exploring with virtual panoramas (I remember some OMA buildings at Domus, included on a CD).

Via @vitra I found that Iwan used this technique on the VitraHaus building by Herzog & de Meuron, which you can now explore from your computer to  get a better idea about the spatial relations between these stacked volumes.

Follow this link to take the virtual tour.

has been changing a  lot over this last decade, turning into a rich cultural city. Events such as Art Basel Beach (the most important art event in the US) and buildings by international architects are part of this ongoing change.

One of these new projects in the city  is 1111 Lincoln Road, a development envisioned by Robert Wennett and materialized by swiss architects  Herzog & de Meuron.

I´m very interested on seeing how this project ends up, and how this can affect (in a positive way) the extension of the Miami Art Museum, another project by Herzog & de Meuron for the city.

Photographer Paul Clemence shared with us some photos of this project during construction, on which you can see more about the expressive structure.

More renderings and the construction photos after the break.

Parrish Art Museum / Herzog & de Meuron

The internationally acclaimed Herzog & De Meuron unveiled their re-conceptualized design for the Parrish Art Museum on the 14-acre Hampton site.  The new design replaces the firm’s original idea which featured a villagelike cluster of pavilions scattered throughout the site.  When the museum could not seem to raise the $80 million necessary to realize the project, they approached Herzog & de Mueron for a more modest proposal.  The architects took the challenge and created a new building for less than a third of the original budget.   The new museum’s long profile, which measures 94 feet wide and 634 feet long, houses galleries arranged in two long rows along a central corridor.  The temporary walls allow the room sizes to be adjusted to account for the changing sizes of the temporary exhibits.

Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, Herzog & de Meuron by Iwan Baan

By — Filed under: Architectural Photography ,Museums and Libraries , , ,

Architecture photographer Iwan Baan just shared with us a photo set of the latest Herzog & de Meuron building in , the Espacio de las Artes at Santa Cruz, Tenerife. Another H&dM building for , after the Caixa Forum (Madrid) and the Forum building (Barcelona).

With over 20,622 sqm, the building includes a public library, a contemporary art museum, the Photography Centre of the Tenerife Island, a store, a cafe/restaurant and several public use spaces for the community.

The building is a long volume intersected by a ramp that generates a triangular plaza. Along the facade, over 1,200 openings in 720 different shapes filter the natural light to the inside, while generating an amazing view during night.

During the opening, Jaques Herzog said that this building will change the image of Tenerife, and along with the Calatrava auditorium will turn the city into a cultural focus.

And now, the photographs by Iwan Baan:

56 Leonard Street by Herzog & de Meuron: the video

By — Filed under: Housing ,Skyscrapers , , , ,

A few months ago we featured an amazing skyscraper by Herzog & de Meuron, that will have a great impact in  the skyline of . I’m very intrigued by the final result of this project, as it develops a pixelated unit composition that many have propossed, but no one has built.

Now, a friend sent me this amazing video to market the building, done by Tronic Studios. The video reveals some portions of the structure of this building, such as beams that distribute the vertical charges of this particular typology.

56 Leonard Street, New York / Herzog & de Meuron

By — Filed under: Housing ,Skyscrapers , ,

Yesterday, I was visiting the Skyscraper Museum in , and I saw an incredible aerial photo that shows the evolution of downtown Manhattan during the last century, from the water reclamation to the black towers to the new skyline without the twin towers. Undoubtedly, this city changes its shape very often.

And as of now, new buildings are bringing new forms to this skyline. First, we have OMA on the 23rd street with its structural facade and cantilevered volume, and now the 56 Leonard Street building by Herzog & de Meuron, which entered the construction phase.

This 57-story residential in the Tribeca area will house 145 residences, each one with its own unique floor plan and private outdoor space. This typology makes the building look like a stack of houses, away from the traditional skyscraper form. I wonder how the concrete structure works on this building, which was done by consultant firm WSP Cantor Seinuk (who also worked on the Freedom Tower).

Inside Herzog & de Meuron Bird’s Nest

By — Filed under: Featured ,Sports Architecture , , ,

We´ve seen tons of pictures of both the exterior and the inner court of Herzog & de Meuron’s bird nest in during the Olympics. But what we haven’t seen is the intermediate space inside the nest fibers, a space which looked amazing on the early renderings.

But thanks to Edgar Gonzalez, we can see the colorful inners of the Bird’s Nest through Manuel Ocaña‘s Flickr.

Pictures after the break.
