5 Protective Face Shields Designed by Architects in Fight against COVID-19

Architects around the world have put their knowledge to use in the fight against the coronavirus. While some designed alternative facilities to increase the capacity of hospitals, others imagined different types of face protection gears to help with the world-wide shortage of masks. Using 3d printing technology, easy to assemble techniques, and low-cost material, firms, universities, and individuals have mobilized their expertise to create face shields for citizens and medical staff.

"When there is globalization in any field there’s the danger that every place becomes similar, or in this case the danger that schools can become similar or standardized, all trying to approach architecture and the academics of architecture in the same way,” she explained. “I think what’s really interesting is to try to look at schools and see how they try to differentiate themselves.”

Career Insights: IE School of Architecture & Design

Career prospects in Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Interior Design have changed profoundly in nearly half a decade. We believe that practices that are global enough are finding great opportunities in this evolution, and that professionals that are excellent in design and in business are thriving.

Career Insights from IE School of Architecture & Design

New levels of competitiveness have arisen in the labor market in the field of Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC), where the development of soft-skills and formal business training is essential. Traditionally, education models in the field of architecture focus on developing technical and artistic skills, leaving a gap in business skills that prove to be key amid challenging economic times. Since 2011, IE School of Architecture & Design’s Master in Architectural Management & Design has trained professionals that wish to develop their business skills and apply them to the AEC field. The program’s alumni work around the globe from Azerbaijan to Switzerland, in diverse companies such as Arup, Foster & Partners, OMA and Gensler.
