DETAIL is awarding the international DETAIL Prize 2020, and in doing so once again recognising the importance of innovative details for the overall design concept.

The Fundamental Design Build Initiative invites 10 early-career architects, designers, and engineers from around the world to San Jose, Costa Rica for a three-month summer residency. Over the duration of the program, participants will be exposed to all aspects of a built work of design including: site analysis, brainstorming, fundraising, project management, sourcing materials, pre-fabrication, onsite construction, public relations, and preparing publicity materials. Participants will be chosen through a competitive selection process and are invited to attend and participate at no cost to themselves beyond travel and per diem expenses. Accommodations are provided in the cultural center of downtown San Jose, Costa Rica.

YAC - Young Architects Competitions and Urban Up l Unipol launch “Hill of the Arts”, a competition of ideas aiming to transform an almost-neglected villa near Turin into a unique and luxury art hotel. A cash prize of € 20,000 will be awarded to the winners selected by an outstanding jury panel made of, among the others, Patrik Schumacher (Zaha Hadid Architects), Daniel Libeskind, Emmanuelle Moureaux, Edoardo Tresoldi, Lukas Barry (Carmody Groarke architects), Paolo Danelli (DAP studio).

The annual Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat's (CTBUH) Tall + Urban Innovation Conference explores and celebrates the very best in innovative tall buildings, urban spaces, building technologies, and construction practices from around the world. Incorporating what was previously known as the CTBUH Annual Awards event, this conference sees the owner/developers, design, and engineer teams for 50+ Awarded projects present in front of an international audience and live juries for winning distinctions across several award categories. Hot topics in the building industry will also be explored through presentations in project rooms.

One activity regarded the strategic vision of the city is that the City of Banja Luka should have a multifunctional space where different purposes would be connected. The function and capacities of that space should satisfy regional needs for this type of activity. The cultural offer is expanding with this content, thus creating optimal conditions for the development of concert, ballet and opera arts, since the existing capacities in the City have long been exceeded in technological and parametric aspects. In addition to the cultural offer, the future complex will also serve as a congress activity that combines the phenomena of the exchange of scientific knowledge and education. The aforementioned contents are accompanied by exhibiting activities, catering, business, administration and other necessary purposes. The concept of multifunctional-hybrid content aims to streamline space utilization without reducing the convenience of use and technology of the intended uses.

Emergencies strike suddenly and without warning. They level cities to the ground and tear down buildings as though they were made of sand. In almost no time at all everything is destroyed and all that remains is the realisation that you have to get up and start all over again from scratch.
In recent years the occurrence of deluges and flooding have increased dramatically. Analogously, conflicts and financial crises persist and lead to the development of serious humanitarian emergencies which put the lives of millions of people at risk. Resolving an emergency of any kind means re-establishing peace and security. The crisis must be dealt with in a timely and coordinated manner that includes reception, sensibility, and awareness. What we are looking for, therefore, is the design of a structure that will house an EOC (Emergency Operations Center) and that can help to facilitate the humanitarian operations of international organisations, allowing them to act with the utmost efficiency. The EOC structure is intended to be a model which supports the countless humanitarian initiatives that international organisations implement in an effort to create a better world.

Students are the backbone of any society or nation. A nation’s progress is dependent on how much is the young generation educated. India is fortunate that more than 60% of its total population of the country consists young people and most of them are the students.

Urban Confluence Silicon Valley, a worldwide open ideas competition, has extended the entry deadline to April 3, 2020. Urban Confluence Silicon Valley invites artists, architects, urban planners, landscape architects, lighting designers, students, designers, engineers, and anyone with a passion for place-making to submit ideas for activating the most critical urban park in the City of San José. The site, which rests at the confluence of the Guadalupe River and Los Gatos Creek, is in a central park and will be across from the future 6-8 million square foot Google Downtown West Mixed-Use Plan and two blocks from Diridon and the new BART Stations, soon to be transformed into one of the most prominent transportation hubs in the United States.

Art is a repository of a society’s collective memory; it tends to preserve what historical facts cannot. It is a form of representation of culture and tradition in most lucid form and acts as a visual language that speaks to all. It has become a chronicle that has created different identities for itself, namely, visual, performing, and written. Art’s transition from utilitarian purposes and aesthetics into work of expression happened hundreds of years after its birth. Where is it now?
Art is the fundamental form of representation yet it is unnoticed, at the comfort of our screens there is a visual barrier that deprives us of its actual flavor.

Education is a form of absorbing and inculcating knowledge, of which learning is an integral part. Over the years, education has evolved into a system and has been organized and re-written innumerable times to a point where it has now it is majorly constrained to classroom teaching focused on academic learning.

Whether we are passionate about our work or just want to earn a living; whether we work for ourselves or for someone we’ll never meet; whether we work with our hands, our heart, or our mind; whether we work sitting down, standing up, inside, outside, during the day, at night, in a business suit or in a boiler suit: work plays a central role in all our lives.

Sports is the cry of triumph, the tears of joy, the beating of chest when your team loses in nail biting crusade. Gathering up on streets in front of a TV, listening to the radio broadcast in a remote village or watching with your friends on a 52-inch screen - the euphoria with which the whole country cheers is unparalleled. A community lives its best experience when everyone is interacting under the same roof. And sports have the potential to provide such a platform.

Music is a language that transcends all barriers. A symphony that resonates among everyone irrespective of their caste, class or colour. Music encompasses culture, political, social and even spiritual connection.

A center stage that connects a community of people and binds them through their shared experience, even if there is nothing that connects them at an individual level.

A public event at Harvard GSD examines the lower sky as a site of mobility

Increasing congestion and advances in autonomous technology are set to transform how we move around our cities. Many are now looking to the sky — the third dimension — as an expansive space for new kinds of mobility. Autonomous flying vehicles, such as cargo drones and flying taxis, have the capacity to disrupt how we move goods and passengers around urban space. Responding to these real-world changes, AERIAL FUTURES: The Third Dimension examines Urban Air Mobility (UAM), asking how scalable and on-demand UAM models could reduce road traffic, pollution, accidents and the strain on existing public transport networks. Within these opportunities are also challenges to overcome: noise, community acceptance, safety, cyber security and seamless integration with existing aircraft operations.

The Museum of Architecture and Design is launching an open call for participation in the 26th Biennial of Design, BIO 26 – Common Knowledge, curated by Austrian design curator and cultural producer Thomas Geisler together with assistant curator Aline Lara Rezende.
