On May 11, the Disseny Hub Barcelona will bring together various figures rooted in the world of architecture to discuss the multiple roles of cities in the 21st century, the state of architecture and urbanism in contemporary society, and to present the Barcelona Protocol—a document developed throughout the day via the contributions of twenty-six international voices.

Workplace: Trends and New Technologies

Architectural production in Latin America presents complex particularities and is a field open to new perspectives and approaches. In this panel discussion, three Brazilian authors will offer their distinct, yet complementary, perspectives on the subject and present their recently published research.

The Museu do Pontal is hosting the seminar "Modernisms, Art and Popular Culture" at its new headquarters in Barra da Tijuca, featuring two sessions: the first on May 21 and the second on June 11. The discussions will explore the relationships between modernisms and Brazilian popular culture. The event aims to review, reflect upon, and better understand the connections that can be drawn from a museum of popular art amidst the centennial commemorations of the 1922 Week of Modern Art.

A travessa—or crossway—represents transversality over convention; it is a shortcut that avoids the obvious, an alternative for shortening paths and connecting disparate pieces juxtaposed by its presence.

The early 20th century in Mexico was marked by a series of social, cultural, and political transformations. European neoclassical artistic influences began to be heavily questioned, and muralism—adopted by the government as a strategy to educate the Mexican people—began to incorporate new narratives, including indigenous and ancestral cultures, while celebrating the revolutionary process.
Collaborative practices between artists and architects intensified during this period. This course seeks to explore and discuss the intersections between art and architecture from 1910 to 1979, based on the work of key figures from this era: Juan O'Gorman and Diego Rivera (1920s–1930s); Mario Pani and Carlos Mérida (the construction of the University City and plastic integration in the 1940s–1950s); Luis Barragán and Mathias Goeritz (1940s–1950s); and Pedro Ramírez Vázquez and La Ruta de la Amistad (1968), concluding with the Espacio Escultórico (1979).

From May 5 to 15, the first edition of Model. Barcelona Architectural Festival will take place. Co-organized by the Barcelona City Council and the Architects' Association of Catalonia (COAC), the event will serve as an open, plural, and multidisciplinary space for reflection, addressing key debates in architecture and urbanism to confront the social, political, and climate challenges of the 21st century.

Insper, through the Arq.Futuro Cities Laboratory, has opened registration for the first cohort of the online course Urban Rehabilitation: Investment and Opportunities, which begins on May 8. In this course, students will learn to identify the factors that determine the obsolescence of an urban area, as well as rehabilitation strategies capable of transforming such environments into vital new spaces. The course is led by architects Samuel Kruchin, principal of Kruchin Arquitetura—one of the first private firms to work in the field of preservation and restoration—and Cristiane Gonçalves, principal of Cambota and a professor at FAU-Mackenzie.

We invite teams from across Brazil to submit projects for the 5th Collaborative Urbanism Project Exhibition, to be held on May 5, 6, and 7 in Belém, Pará.
