The Adelaide Contemporary International Design Competition is a global search for an outstanding design team to create a new cultural destination for Australia. Adelaide Contemporary will showcase an exceptional collection of international and Australian, including Aboriginal, art. It will benefit from a strategic site on the city’s cultural boulevard and combine a contemporary gallery with a public sculpture park and meeting place. Adelaide Contemporary will extend the concept of an art destination and combine new public and cultural features, creating an accessible community meeting place and integrating art, education, nature and people.

In the future Ban Xue Gang High-Tech Zone will use information and communications technology, and technological creative industry as its engine, together with Longhua Center, Qinghu Sub- center, Shenezhenbei Railway Station business center, to develop jointly and become a demonstrative area that unites technological business, industry incubation, and service, merges industrial and urban qualities. 

Bamboo U was an idea originally conceived to help teach professionals about the potential of bamboo as a green building material. In its current form it is a design and bamboo build workshop in Bali hosted by The Kul Kul Farm at the Green School; facilitated in collaboration with the bamboo design firm, IBUKU.

Bamboo U is a unique opportunity to design and build alongside some of the architects, designers and craftsmen who built the Green School. The group will investigate the available sites and hear from Elora Hardy, her team at IBUKU and John Hardy, co-founder of Green School.

Urbanism in a Digitalizing World.

Great Rivers Greenway is leading a major public-private partnership to establish the conceptual plan for the Chouteau Greenway in St. Louis through this design competition. The goal of the project is to connect the areas of Washington University and Forest Park to Downtown and the Gateway Arch and Mississippi Riverfront. With spurs north and south and many other destinations along the way, the greenway will connect area neighborhoods, employment centers, parks, transit, and dozens of cultural and educational institutions.

In a bold attempt to identify the next, upcoming generation of European architecture practitioners, The European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies announces the 2018 submission dates for the European-wide Awards Program that identifies, promotes, and exhibits the next generation of European architects under the age of 40.

For 28 years, FIU Architecture students have participated-in and celebrated Walk on Water, a race founded and orchestrat­ed by Professor Jaime Canaves. Aerial Futures: Leading Edge is lively, provocative and interdisciplinary symposium examining the architecture, technologies and cultures of the contemporary airport. Curated by PLANE—SITE and free to attend, this two-day event understands the airport as a choreographed topography of hypermobility, information and cultures, defining how we travel, trade and connect with each other. It marks the threshold between land and sky, as well as sovereign territories. The airport — what the philosopher Giorgio Agamben describes as a ‘zone of exception’ where the ordinary rules no longer apply — is where the definitive issues of the 21st century play out.

Many of the physical spaces that architects, landscape architects, urbanists, and engineers design are inherently locales of joint access and participation. Such long-existing typologies of sharing include plazas, living rooms, libraries, waiting areas, museums, and cohousing schemes. The built environment serves as the platform within which myriad sociological, cultural, and technological forces share legal parameters and broader audiences. Today, digitally-based platforms, supported by vast physical infrastructures, facilitate new types of exchange. Such platforms bring about liberating possibilities to actualize transnational networks that coalesce around food, shelter, transportation, and talent. Yet, for every emancipatory path an equally restrictive one exists. Digitally-mediated sharing can serve as a mask for diffuse forms of financialization and extraction in spatial domains that traditionally conducted their day-to-day operations outside of the flows of global capital.

Durham University and University College London are pleased to announce the establishment of a new multi-disciplinary research network called the BOVA (Building out vector-borne diseases in sub-Saharan Africa) Network. The Network, funded by the Global Challenges Research Fund aims to bring together researchers and practitioners working in the fields of the built environment and insect-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue.

The Arte Laguna Prize is an international art competition aimed at promoting and enhancing contemporary art. The contest stands out in the global art scene for the variety of its partnerships and opportunities offered to artists and designers, and is recognized worldwide as a real springboard for the artists’ career.

INTRODUCTION
Phoenix, the fifth largest city in the United States by population and area, is very much a function of the 20th century technologies that enabled its rapid post WWII growth and inhabitation of an arid desert environment. While frequently cited for seemingly endless suburban sprawl, the metro area is in a state of transformation and is beginning to densify in line with other emergent urban centers. For decades, vacant land has made up a sizable portion of Phoenix’s land mass — up to 43 percent in the year 2000, according to a study by the Washington, D.C.-based Brookings Institution Center on Urban and Metropolitan Policy. This is especially true of the Phoenix downtown area, a location which has enjoyed positive, if not game-changing, developments over the past decade including light rail, a new university campus, thousands of new housing units, and an increasingly attractive business environment. The area also features a celebrated and long-standing arts and culture core with an emerging live music scene.

"Earth Roots Renascence" is the theme of the 2017 Ruichang – L&A Design Star Competition. It takes the former site of the Jiangxi Jiangzhou Dockyard as the focal point of the competition, including the surrounding mountains, waterbody, and towns as the design site. Designers are asked to research the new "tourism plus" model; to consider the area's industrial heritage, which includes the Tongling Site, the Old 459 Factory, the 491 Factory, the Hongxia People Factory, the Xinmin Machine Factory and other old sites; to consider basic ecological establishments, creative tourism, art and public education; and to generate modern cultural tourism through appropriate planning. With this competition, Ruichang is envisioned as an “all-for-one” tourism experience with a global perspective, and a promotional tourism resource.

CODE (COmpetitions for DEsigners) and con-fine Art have launched “The Wall,” a design competition aiming at a re-interpreting the concept of “wall.” The initiative, in cooperation with Regione Emilia Romagna, the Municipality of Bologna, and the University and the School of Fine Arts in Bologna has a cash prize of € 10,000, and winning projects will also be exhibited. The jury comprises renowned personalities of the design and art international scene, including among others Arnaldo Pomodoro, Edoardo Tresoldi, Massimo Iosa Ghini, Franco Purini and TAMassociati.
