Design Week is a biannual event hosted by the Department of Architecture and Design at the Universidad de la Costa (Barranquilla, Colombia), established in 2019. Pandemic, economic crisis, migration and climate change: every area –from the periphery of our metropolis to the most remote tropical village– can now be defined as an "emergency context". DI 2021 stands for Design and Innovation in 2021. This competition is open to both conceptual proposals, as well as realized projects by young designers, entrepreneurs and tech professionals worldwide. Comunal Taller - Mexico. Founded by Mariana Ordóñez Grajales and Jesica Amescua Carrera, Comunal is an architecture studio whose practice is deeply rooted in negotiation processes between consensus and dissent. They work against the notion of authorship as a static, artistic, and unchangeable object, viewing architecture instead as a social, collaborative, living, open, and constantly evolving process. They treat inhabitants as active subjects rather than objects of intervention. In their projects, they encourage and facilitate the participation of women—adults, youth, and children—in strategic, administrative, and construction processes, understanding the logic, performance, and collective definitions of these women and their community, while always respecting their cultural context.

As the domain where different vectors of the current climate crisis meet and interact, and where conflicts around its regulation are emerging, the atmosphere also produces multiple localities where these transformations can be observed and understood—and sites of mediation can be imagined. Far from being understood in all of its complexity, the atmosphere continues to elude our ability to model its dynamics—or to compute future scenarios.
This international event is organized by the Faculty of Architecture - Department of Academic Direction (DDAA), the Postgraduate Unit of the UNCP, and the “El Cubo” collective in Huancayo, Peru. The event features keynote speaker Jan Gehl, one of the most influential figures in global urbanism. Through his work, he has championed the sustainability of major metropolises and made it his mission to advocate for urban planning that allows people, rather than automobiles, to reclaim the streets.
On 25 November, 10am CET, OMA, Hassell, WA Museum Boola Bardip, and the Netherlands embassy in Canberra will join a panel discussion with a focus on the architecture of the Museum.
