This book compiles the reflections of four academics from various national universities on the city, urbanism, public space, mobility, and transportation. It is the result of "Conversaciones al costado del camino," a series of interviews developed by Corporación Pedaleable in collaboration with Ediciones de Arquitectura in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, literature on sustainable mobility and urban planning from everyday, interdisciplinary perspectives is scarce and not widely disseminated. This is what motivated us to reach out to various figures in academia, public policy, and urban practice to discuss and exchange ideas regarding the issues surrounding these concepts.

It may not be your first instinct when entering a building to consider how it makes you feel, but architecture has always had a big impact on emotions. Different spaces are designed to make its inhabitants feel different things; offices can make you feel energised and productive, art galleries can make you feel thoughtful and curious, and museums can make you feel calm and intrigued. Each of these spaces are completely different from each other and are far more than just a building.

An urban space quipped to handle residents and strangers alike and to make safety an asset in itself. A thriving city neighborhood must have three main qualities: First, there must be a clear boundary between what is public space and what is private space. Public and private spaces can not ooze into each other as they do typically in suburban settings or projects. Second, there must be eyes upon the street, eyes belonging to those we might call the natural proprietors of the road. The buildings on an urban street should be equipped to handle strangers and ensure the safety of both residents and strangers. They must be oriented to the street. They cannot turn their backs or blank sides on it and leave it blind. Third, public spaces must have users on them reasonably continuously, both to add to the number of effective panopticons and to induce the people in buildings surrounding the space to perform as active characters responsible for the safety of the space.
