On July 25, 1916, New York City enacted the nation’s first comprehensive zoning code. Intended as an innovative tool to guide urban growth, the law continues to play a central role in shaping our city a century later. On the centenial anniversary of the first Zoning Resolution, the Museum of the City of New York and The Municipal Art Society co-present an in-depth examination of the law – with an eye towards the future. We will ask: how can zoning better serve contemporary objectives and address the major challenges – physical, economic, and social – facing our city today?

The Center for Architecture, in collaboration with CONSTRUCTO, will present the exhibition EXTRA-ORDINARY: New Practices in Chilean Architecture, opening on Wednesday, June 22 at 5:30 pm, curated by CONSTRUCTO foundersJeannette Plaut and Marcelo Sarovic. The opening will begin with a roundtable discussion between Plaut, Sarovic and MoMA Director Glenn Lowry and will be followed by a presentation by architect Smiljan Radic.

Open House New York and the Museum of the City of New York invite you to celebrate the centennial anniversary of New York City's 1916 Zoning Resolution with a citywide scavenger hunt to uncover how the invisible forces of zoning have shaped the city around us, from the dramatic setbacks of Jazz Age skyscrapers to the vast open plazas of mid-century Modernism.

Join Open House New York for a presentation by Jonathan Cohn, AIA, LEED AP, Principal, Perkins Eastman; Navid Maqami,AIA, LEED AP, Principal, S9 Architecture; and Richard Marin, President and CEO, New York Wheel, on the design and execution of the New York Wheel. Currently under construction in St. George on the northern shore of Staten Island, the 630-foot tall wheel will be one of the tallest observation wheels in the world, offering visitors unparalleled views of the New York Harbor.

For the first time this May, the UK’s leading design exhibition, designjunction, and Dwell on Design, America’s largest design event, will partner during NYCxDESIGN. This highly anticipated collaboration promises to present the city’s most exciting display of cutting-edge design and captivating conversations. Visitors can expect to discover more than 20 contemporary design brands including Artek, Dyke and Dean, Whitebeam Studio, Cuero, Capsbury and Melin Tregwynt—who will present their latest product launches and design classics within a multipurpose setting. Center for Architecture is proud to present the return of Guess-A-Sketch, a lively evening where architects, architecture enthusiasts, and young professionals gather for an architecture-themed, pictionary-style tournament. Charles Renfro, AIA will host the evening as Master of Ceremonies. Honoree sketchers draw iconic buildings as battling teams guess to win. Enjoy libations and hors d’oeuvres served all night. Audience members are encouraged to play by tweeting their guesses.

This exhibition of several hundred original photographs examines the work of Iraqi architect Rifat Chadirji through the collection of his documents held at the Arab Image Foundation in Beirut. With the work of his architectural office, Iraq Consult, and in his other roles as a planning consultant and as director of buildings for several government agencies, Chadirji became a pivotal cultural figure in Baghdad during the period of its postwar modernization from the 1950s through the 1970s.
