"Neither the archaeologist, nor the interior designer, nor the architect, nor the painter, nor the sculptor should furnish our apartment. Who should do it, then? The answer is quite simple: Every man his own interior designer.” The Interiors in the Rotunda (1898) by Adolf Loos
In 1973, Ettore Sottsass published on Casabella magazine a text and a series of drawings entitled The Planet as a Festival. For centuries, faith has been a source of immeasurable blessings as well as uncountable catastrophes. People, no matter how different, have always felt protected under the aegis of a common belief and united to accomplish the unthinkable. But its fruitful potentials are only equal to its destructive dangers. Faith can be the most untameable of fires, and with the promise for righteousness or virtue it can tear families apart, close down borders, promote genocide, foster war.

It offers a stage and provides a backdrop for the workings of the city in this process, and as an outcome of an increasingly complex urban pluralism also registers and embodies in its changing architecture many conflicts and compromises.

FM8 is concerned with the meaning of architecture and the city. The dinosaurs of capitalism have become the senescence of urbanism. If the modernist project of carte blanche is over, how do we engage the city’s filthy state without a clean slate?
The theatre was built in 1966-67. Now it is an abandoned municipal building. The theatre needs to be reconstructed/rebuilt taking into account current needs of the Cherkasy community. In summer 2015 our local volunteers team voiced the intention for revitalising Sylvan theatre and started a fundraising campaign. Thanks to the city community we have accumulated funds which will be the prize for this competition winner. We also polled participants of the fundraising campaign to discover their preferences for ways of the money application and for the concept of the future theatre. So Cherkasy citizens vote for the architecture projects competition. Requirements for projects are also based on the poll results.
