Rio de Janeiro is inviting everyone to be part of the 2020 official calendar, as the city serves as the first UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture and host of the 27th World Congress of Architects. The City Hall has published a public call (number 02/2019) in the Official Municipal Gazette, opening the floor for institutions and cultural producers from Brazil and abroad to submit proposals for events related to architecture, cultural heritage, landscaping, urban management, or discussions on the cities of the future.

In all its multiple meanings the word heritage refers to what we inherit from the past, both in material and immaterial sense.

Some authors speak about heritage as a sense of past, meant as a form of past self-awareness, as a collective experience and as an essential dimension of a culture. Some other authors believe that the idea of heritage deals with the ability to put the contemporary human signs into a historical perspective, so developing a sense of place, that is the place’s value and meaning.
Therefore, heritage can be intended as a sense of past and sense of place together.
The heritage’s existence itself lies in the ability to read/interpret the sense of belonging of something inherited from the past to a specific place, as well as in the shared need to preserve and deliver it to future generations.

Organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) and curated by Mariana Pestana, the 5th Istanbul Design Biennial will take place on 26 September – 8 November 2020. To be held with the title Empathy Revisited: designs for more than one, the biennial invites everyone from around the world to respond to the open call.

In conjunction with the 2019 IAPS Symposium, "Aging in Place in a World of Inequalities: How to Design Healthy Cities for All"—held from November 27 to 30, 2019, in Pelotas, Brazil—the thirteenth edition of PIXO (a journal of architecture, city, and contemporaneity) is now accepting submissions under the theme AGING IN PLACE. We are pleased to announce the launch of the International Journal of Education in Architecture and Design (IJEAD), a new journal aiming to create a platform to collect and present several approaches, examples, experiments to architectural and design education. The journal will be a valuable resource for those interested in the areas of architectural education, design education, urban planning education, interior architecture education, industrial design education, landscape design education and other related disciplines. Its main aims are:

Research-related design and design-related research in architecture, urban design and landscape architecture are generated, supported and structured by intentions as conscious purpose and position as well as intended content of perception, thought and action. The symposium will examine modes of action and meanings of intentions. How do they have an orienting, clarifying and dynamic effect within the processes of design and research, and how do they contribute to design and knowledge? What tensions arise between imprint, orientation and the projective, between research, imagination and realization, and how can these be evaluated, communicated and conveyed in a transferable way? To question characteristics of intentions in the creative contexts of action and their impact is particularly connected with dimensions of 'Reflexive Design'.

The Mohamed Makiya Prize is part of Tamayouz Excellence Award's programme that champions and celebrates the best of architecture in the Middle East and North Africa.
