Designed by SADAR + VUGA, the Sci-Park Maribor scientific park is founded by the University of Maribor and is to occupy a section of a degraded former industrial area of Tezno at the south fringe of the city. Six individual buildings with a combined 30.000 m2 total floor area will be constructed on a 80.000 m2 site in several phases. These buildings, together with a shared parking garage, form ‘garden islands’ that accommodate irregular shapes of the site’s border; the way these islands are arranged on the site creates different ambients of open urban areas among them.

Redevelopment of the Southern Terrace of Jabal al-Qal’a, designed by Dina Hadi, Mousa Shahin, and Hazim Samawi and supervised by Leen Fakhoury from the School of Architecture, University of Jordan recieved the award of The Omrania | CSBE Student Award for Excellence in Architectural Design.

MVRDV shared with us their design of The Water Cube, a pavilion for the World Expo 2012 in Yeosu, Korea. The theme of the Expo is “The Living Ocean and Coast”. You can see more proposals for the thematic pavilion by Ginseng Chicken, PTA, and Nicoletti Associati.

With spatial designs that are skillfully integrated with the outside environment, Takaharu Tezuka and Yui Tezuka from designs range from private houses to community buildings. Their most important works are; the Roof House, in which daily life expands onto the roof. Echigo Matsunoyama Museum of Natural Science, which can be buried under 5m of snow. Fuji Kindergarten takes the form of a 200m-circumference oval-shaped roof space. In Woods of Net, 589 timber members are piled up to create a 320 cubic meter space to enclose the artwork.
The RIBA Royal Gold Medal for 2010 goes to an architect whose renown has been built over several decades of consistently producing a very particular kind of structure — often aspired to, rarely achieved.

Usuki House / Tonoma In the site, the shape becomes the semicircle shape in the neighbor of the main building. It was necessary to build the new house in consideration of a main building and a small barn. With the Taipei Pop Music Center, Reiser + Umemoto and ARUP have fundamentally rethought the live music and entertainment venue to meet the challenges and opportunities of pop music and digital media in the 21st century.

The idea of this project is to form a live music hub that creates richly diverse experiences reflective of Taipei’s music scene. The design knits together unique venues—large and small—with indoor, outdoor and semi-enclosed public spaces, forming a dense urban architecture connected through the live experience of music.

Office dA (design architect) with Y. Lin Architect (joint tenderer) and CAZA (design consultant) received third prize at the Taipei Pop Music Center Competition.
Located in the Nangang District, the principal space design comprises of an indoor performing hall with 4500-6000 seats, an outdoor performing space with 15000 standing seats, exhibition space for reputed musicians, a digital library, a medium and small indoor exhibition and performing live house, industrial communities and incubation space, etc.

The Chicago Architectural Club is pleased to announce the 2010 Chicago Prize Competition: MINE THE GAP, a single-stage international design ideas competition dedicated to examining one of the most visible scars left after the collapse of the real estate market in Chicago: the massive hole along the Lake Michigan shore that was to have been—and may yet be—the foundation for a singular 150-story condominium tower designed by an internationally-renowned Spanish architect, a tower which was to have become a new icon for the city and region.
The international ideas competition “TownShift: Suburb into City” recently announced the list of finalists. The competition seeks innovative ideas for five established town centers of Surrey, Canada: Guildford, Fleetwood, Cloverdale, Newton and Semiahmoo. The aim of the competition is to “Shift” thinking and opportunities for each of these “Town” hubs towards more intense, public-minded and productive urban futures.

The latest issue of eVolo Magazine is focused on tall buildings.
As with the previous issue, the magazine is divided in two parts. The first includes news and opinion, featuring projects such as MahaNakhon by Ole Scheeren + OMA, the Phare Tower by Morphosis or the Miyi Tower by Studio SHIFT + SWA Group. What I really liked on this section is an article titled “Pixelated tectonics: Unitized Aggregation Techniques and Formal Organizations” by Elie Gamburg, on which he analyzes the Sky Village by MVRDV and the Le Project Triangle by Herzog & de Meuron
The second part, “Depth”, includes over thirty towers from the eVolo Skyscraper 09 Competition.
