June Jordan: Pleasures of Perspectives | 2022 Womxn in Design and Architecture Conference

June Jordan’s visionary practice reimagines the role of the built environment in creating just futures. Deeply committed to human rights and political activism, she used language to design a model for pedagogy and activism centered on ecology, care, and justice. While Jordan’s literary contributions reflect her work as a poet, author, teacher, and activist, what does it mean to call June Jordan an architect?

Reimagining the Possibilities for Affordable Housing in a Climate Risk Environment

 | Sponsored Content

Affordable housing has become an increasingly dire global issue. Be it rent or homeownership, the unaffordability of homes has been on the rise. A look at U.S. Census data illustrates a sharp decline in homeownership in recent decades. Although Millennials were the most populous generation by 2019, they only contributed to homeownership at a rate of 47.9%. Contrastingly, Gen-X’s homeownership rate stood at 69%, following the silent generation at 77.8%. Trends of generational decline in homeownership are mirrored in other parts of the world, such as in the U.K. where rates have steadily dropped from 71% in 2003 to 64% by 2018. Many experts point to affordability as a large reason for this decline.

Using Light as an Architectural Tool with Archilume

 | Sponsored Content

For architects and interior designers, lighting helps to demarcate areas of an interior, albeit subtly, through the intangible medium of light. A space-saving alternative to partitions and walls, lighting can informally subdivide open-plan spaces into zones devoted to different uses – a bar area in a hotel lobby, say, or the kitchen area of a living-room-cum-kitchen.

Babyn Yar Masterplan Open Ideas Competition

On September 29 and 30, 1941, more than 33,000 Jewish men, women, and children were murdered in Babyn Yar, a ravine in the Ukrainian capital Kiev. This event constituted one of the largest single massacres perpetrated by German troops against Jews during World War II. Over the following two years, Germans killed upwards of 70,000 more people. Upon evacuating the city in 1943, the bodies were exhumed and burned. Babyn Yar is the international symbol of what is known today as the “Holocaust by Bullets.”

MAD ABOUT DUGNAD – WORK TOGETHER, BUILD BETTER

The Norwegian tradition of ‘dugnad’ encourages everyone to contribute in order to achieve a common goal. It is based on a process of social relations, reciprocity and community solidarity and thus on the belief that together you are stronger than alone. The architecture firm Mad refers to ‘dugnad’ as a key to creating solutions for a sustainable future in an increasingly complex and challenging world. For Mad, architecture is also about re-evaluating, nurturing or preserving social and cultural resources that shape our built environment. These aspects can be observed exemplarily in the four projects that have been compiled for the exhibition at Aedes – among them, the timber high-rise WoHo in Berlin-Kreuzberg, which is currently under planning and is considered a social pilot project in urban development.

Udaipur Workshop

The Medieval city of Udaipur is a unique historical example of a settlement pattern that is a result of its topography and water systems. It forms a fine study to understand how the medieval cities in western India established a close-knit relationship with nature.

In this workshop, the participants will learn to observe and analyse the spatial structure of the city, the character of its public spaces and its correlation with topography and water. The workshop will also explore themes of community spaces, urban structures, water systems and the role of civic architecture. The workshop will entail on-field observation & documentation, followed by discussions and presentations.

Online 3D Walkthroughs are Taking Over From Image and Video Renderings

A rendering image, beautiful as it can be, is a cutout, a small sample of what it feels like to be in a place. A video rendering adds some extra action, but it still is just a predetermined visual journey from A to B, leaving the person who interacts with the rendering as just a spectator. Renderings can be much more immersive than that.

The Value of Integrated BIM Project Information

For many design teams, logging into multiple applications a day to access BIM information is the norm. Yet the information contained in each of these applications tends to be siloed, making it difficult for project teams to make informed decisions, collaborate, and share information.
