The Boston Society of Architects plans to move from its current location on 52 Broad Street to a new space at Atlantic Wharf, as part of a major transformation of the 1867 institution. As part of an open design competition, the BSA selected Höweler + Yoon Architecture’s proposal entitled: Slipstream Public Exchange. Once again, Vítor Gabriel shared with us this beautiful video of the Musealization of the Archaeological Site of Praça Nova of São Jorge Castle designed by portuguese architect João Luís Carrilho da Graça to preserve some archaeological discoveries – Iron Age settlement, Mediaeval Muslim occupation and a Fifteenth Century Palace – found in 1996. Lappset Group Oy has awarded the first prize of their international design competition for 3 Generations to Tengiz Alaverdashvili’s proposal “Green Hill”. His simplistic approach to a multi-generational, universal park space created a design that relies solely on its users for program, allowing for a inviting, relaxing atmosphere. Rocker-Lange architects shared with us the release of their research project, Serial Architecture – Systems of Multiplicities, which was also part of the exhibit “Quotidian Architectures” in the Hong Kong Pavillion at the Venice Biennale 2010. The project, accompanied by a 400+ book, rethinks quotidian architecture in Hong Kong, a city with an average density of over 6,300 people per square kilometer. Laposa Winery / Atelier Peter Kis The wines of the Laposa-Cellar following the millennium became well known amongst Hungarian wine drinkers under the brand name “Bazaltbor” or Basalt wine. Their growing regions are only on the basalt hills – in Badacsony, Somló, on Szentgyörgy-hill and Csobánc – which is the reason for the characteristic mineral aromas of the wines that mirror their terroir (read more…)

I’m drawn to John Berger’s essay “Why Look at Animals” for many reasons but primarily because it takes something obvious and turns it inside-out to reveal dimensions that were completely unexpected. The way he describes our cultural and personal engagement with animals got me thinking about how we look at architecture and why we look at it. What are we trying to see there? And is there a there there?

LED Architecture Studio present their submission for the A101 Block City Competition in Moscow Russia. Architects Alessandro Liberati and Roberto Straccali of LED Architecture Studio designed the Social Machine, a housing block that seeks to engage the residents with the street life, while maintaining a sense of privacy for the users of the housing complex.

AutoCAD WS is a program that is available for free and only requires a browser such as Safari, IE, Chrome, or Firefox with Flash installed. It allows users to upload, edit, markup, and share in real-time with DWG files, while also uploading and storing files such as ZIP, Doc, and PDF files. It also gives users control over who can download and views drawings that have been uploaded.

First launched in October 2010, it has another useful feature that many users are unfamiliar with which allows users to overlay their AutoCAD DWG files over existing Google Maps in any of the standard views types: Street, Satellite, Hybrid and Terrain. This tool adds context to your plans and gives a more precise reading of your drawings an designs in existing site conditions in real-time.

For Weiss/Manfredi’s International Retreat – a conference center for international organizations to discuss issues and politics – the project exemplifies the firm’s emphasis of the integration of architecture and landscape. A series of existing early 20th-century buildings sit on the 400 acre site, and the project uses a network of gardens to create a framework for these renovated and programmatically transformed structures.
