Places Journal Relaunches With a Fresh Commitment to Accessible Architecture Scholarship

After a five-year stint as part of the Design Observer Group, Places Journal has now struck out on their own with a fresh, modern website and a renewed commitment to their editorial goal of publishing "rigorous and lively public scholarship on architecture, landscape, and urbanism." As explained by Places Journal's editor and executive director Nancy Levinson, "what drives our editorial enterprise is the publication of excellent work that combines the narrative power of serious journalism with the precision and depth of scholarship — work that advances the cause of equitable cities and sustainable landscapes." With funding and support from a host of academic partners including ETH Zurich, MIT, Penn State, SCI-Arc, and many more, Places Journal is well connected to deliver high quality architectural journalism and research. The Journal is also beginning a new series of articles on cities in extreme transition thanks to funding from the Graham Foundation, and is working on developing Places Books, a series of their articles expanded into short, topical books, as well as a tool to create and share reading lists and Places Wire, a curated selection of the best architecture news around the web.

"In the five years since Places went digital, after twenty-five years in print, publishing and media have experienced more or less continuous change, from the introduction of tablets and mobile apps to the phenomenal rise of social media," says Levinson. "No doubt there will be yet more change, and here at Places we’ll remain agile and ready — and always with the larger goal of serving as a vital and trusted resource on the future of buildings, landscapes, and cities in a volatile time."
