Dwell on Design, an immersive 3-day design exhibition at the Los Angeles Convention Center from June 20-22, will feature over 400 exhibitors and 90 presentations on ‘new ideas for modern living.’
The exhibition’s main themes will be highlighted in five pavilions curated by Dwell editors. Energy 360 Pavilion: “showcasing new technologies that advance the built environment, focusing on smart home technology. Design for Humankind: “exploring how good design makes our lives better by protecting our quality of life,” with a focus on accessible design. Scandinavian Pavilion: “celebrating the unique modern design heritage found in Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Denmark.” Modern Family Pavilion: “offering innovative architecture and design solutions that address the myriad needs, configurations, and challenges that make a house a home.” Design for Tomorrow: “student exhibition space showcasing student work in the form of multi-media, mixed media, models, and drawings from top area schools.”
An LA-specific regimen of presentations from Commune Design, LA Times book critic David Ulin, and Rios Clementi Hale, will discuss the city’s multiuse projects, the ongoing drought, and the efforts to revitalize LA’s urban core.
Other notable onstage productions include the Young Guns series, which focuses on the impact of emerging designers using new materials; in the spotlight are Alvin Huang, founder of Synthesis Design + Architecture and winner of the AA Design Research Lab 10 Pavilion Competition, industrial designer and curator Jonathan Olivares, furniture maker Al Que Quiere, and designer Brendan Ravenhill.
The event will also showcase Dwell editors’ favorite modern product designs and feature a Dwell-sponsored competition to honor the exhibitors. For those aspiring professionals in the crowd, Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will also be offered via onstage programming and in supplementary event spaces.
